Bad Grief is the head of the criminal underworld of the town, and he can become quite a valuable ally occasionally if you manage to protect him on Day 4 in Pathologic 3.
Protecting Bad Grief is also interesting since he serves as one of the first major characters that The Bachelor can protect in the game. Follow these exact steps to ensure Bad Grief comes out of Day 4 alive and well.
Saving him on Day 4 prevents his gruesome death, turns him into a recurring ally, and fits the game’s theme of rewriting doomed paths via time travel and persuasion. Fail, and you’ll mourn his crucified corpse on Day 5 while missing out on his shop.
Bad Grief’s Nest in the Warehouses District
Head to the northern end of the warehouses (abandoned industrial zone, rat-infested). Look for Bad Grief’s Nes, a dilapidated warehouse lair guarded by his gang. Fast travel to the theater hub and then run northeast. When you reach the warehouse, you will see two bandits outside blaming Bad Grief for Simon Kain’s demise.
How to Protect Bad Grief in Pathologic Day 4

On Day 4, you can find Bad Grief locked up in his base in the Warehouse district. He does so to protect himself from two people attempting to take his life in an attempt to avenge Simon Kain, whom they believe was murdered by Bad Grief.
Here, you have two options. The first option involves simply talking to the duo and killing them when violence breaks out. However, the more reasonable option entails convincing the group to leave Bad Grief alone. Pick the following dialogue options to solve the conflict without any violence:
- What did Bad Grief do to you? Why are you breaking into his place?
- What makes you think Bad Grief killed Simon? Do you have evidence?
- That doesn’t answer my question. Do you have evidence of Bad Grief’s guilt?
- Simon disapproved of smuggling? In my experience, operations like these never run without tacit endorsement from the powers that be.
- Is that why you’re attacking Bad Grief? Because he said something wrong? Looked at you wrong?
- I didn’t cry either when I learned of Simon’s death. Does that mean I killed him?
- People process loss in different ways. I didn’t see his face myself, but something tells me you’re exaggerating.
- I get the impression Simon meant a lot to you. Did you know him personally?
- Simon set an example for how to treat criminals. And now what are you doing?
- You almost killed Simon, and he responded by breaking bread with you.
- It’s not right. But you do understand that killing Bad Grief won’t bring Simon back?
- I knew you were reasonable men. I’m glad to be proven right.
Following this conversation, the two men should leave, allowing you to enter Bad Grief’s base and talk to his assistants and him.
Alternative: Violent Path (Quick but Risky)
You can take the violent path and take out the two bandits who are threatening Greif. This is a faster route, but it will cost you previous ammo. Taking them out isn’t for players who want a pure run or a possible ding to their reputation.
What Happens If You Fail to Save Bad Grief?

If you fail to save Bad Greif either by messing up the dialogue or using force fails too, the man will be jumped inside the warehouse and then crucified outside by Day 5 of Pathologic.
But the worst part for your run would be losing access to the merchant, making it harder for survival later. I recommend rewinding to Day 4 start if you fail.
