If you thought Smash Bros. creator spending 90M yen on his unmonetized YouTube channel is the headline of the day, you’re wrong. The legendary “Can It Run Doom?” challenge has claimed another unlikely victim – Nintendo’s quirky new Alarmo. Despite some saying it is not possible, an absolute sigma modder managed to successfully run the game on Alarmo.
Thanks to the ingenious work of Wii U reverse engineer GaryOderNichts. This latest feat adds the $99 interactive alarm clock.
After my last post, it was pretty clear what everyone wanted to see on the Alarmo.
But like any groundbreaking tech experiment, there are some fascinating technical details under the hood.
The current implementation runs without audio support, and getting around the USB loader’s memory constraints required some clever engineering.
GaryOderNichts developed a sophisticated compression system that unpacks the game’s .wad file to external memory during boot.
The shareware version of Doom can be loaded directly from USB without any permanent modifications to your $99 Nintendo alarm clock.
GaryOderNichts has open sourced the entire project which means even you can try it out. You can find detailed documentation on GaryOderNichts blog on how to pull this off.
