The Butterfly Collector is a side quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and finding all the butterfly locations is the first task of this quest.
It sees you find several origami butterflies in the Izumi Settsu region. Once you collect all the butterflies, it leads to various other missions and quests as you work your way to fight a group of enemies kidnapping children.
The quest is given by Gamemaker and unlocks during Act 1 from story progression. Once you complete the quest, you are rewarded with 5500 XP along with the Butterfly of Benevolence Trinket, the Butterfly of Benevolence Amulet, and Ebisu’s Gamble Bow.
In this guide, we will share the location of all the ten butterflies in this quest. Before you get going, here are a couple of things you must know: all the butterflies are hidden around Osaka and are found on trees.
How to Start the Butterfly Collector Quest in AC Shadows
Go to the location shown in the images above (Katano, Izumi Settsu). Find the woman known the Butterfly collector and accept her quest. Choose the dialogue option “I will play” to start the Butterfly Collector Quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

In the Osaka region, hold down on the left trigger (LT / R2) and use focus mode while roaming the area. You will easily spot blue dots (butterflies) at the locations shown in the map above.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Butterfly Location #1
You can find a purple butterfly to the west of Osaka Castle and Nishinomaru Garden. You can spot it on a tree on the waterline right next to a lantern.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Butterfly Location #2
The second butterfly, a green one, can be found in the back garden of one of the many houses in the eastern district of the hamlet. To spot the butterfly, you have to climb onto a building’s roof to see it sitting on a tree right in front of you.

This one is a white butterfly, and you can find it quite close to the green one. To find this butterfly, head to the middle bridge located southwest of Osaka Castle and Nishinomaru Garden. You will find this butterfly sitting on a tree near the bridge.
Once you collect this butterfly, you will get a note about the details of a kidnapped child.

The fourth butterfly is also a white one. After collecting the first white butterfly, cross the bridge and travel south along the waterline till you reach a point where the path goes southwest. At this point, check out the bushes and trees around you and you will spot a white butterfly on one of the trees. After collecting this butterfly, you will also get a clue that will open up the Butterfly Collector section of the objective board.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Butterfly Location #5
This is the third white butterfly you will collect in the Butterfly Collector task in AC Shadows. It can be found northwest of the Osaka Temple, close to the river.
If you can’t locate it easily, get on the south side of the river and cross the area before the curve in the river’s path. The butterfly will be on a tree near a bush and a lantern. You will also get the final clue alongside the butterfly at this point.

For the sixth butterfly, a yellow one, head over to the settlements northeast of the Temple of Osaka and north of Kakurega in Osaka. You will find a big tree in the middle of some houses with the yellow butterfly sitting on it.

You can locate the 7th red butterfly on the north side of the Temple of Osaka. If you are having trouble finding the red origami butterfly, complete a quick circle around the castle, and when you reach the north side, you will find a tree with a red butterfly.

After finding the red butterfly, you can find the blue one easily, as it is directly to the west of the Temple of Osaka.
When heading west, watch out for a shrine. Get on the back side of this shrine; you will find the 8th butterfly in the AC Shadows Butterfly Collector quest, poking above the shrine’s roof.

From there, head to the waterline directly south of the Temple of Osaka to find the 9th butterfly.
You will find an orange origami butterfly sitting on a tree right next to water and in front of a small house.

The last butterfly to find in the Butterfly Collector task in AC Shadows is a pink one. To find this one, you need to head to the southwest side of the village.
Once you are there, you will see a bridge leading to the Fisherman’s district. Watch out for a stable in the area, and once you are there, look at the trees closely, as you will find the butterfly sitting on a tree between two buildings in the stable.
Once you have collected all 10 butterflies in the Butterfly Collector mission in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you will have several quests to investigate the missing children that you read about in clues and notes.
