Avowed presents various choices to players throughout the game. One of these choices occurs during the Ancient Soil quest, and players have to decide about the fate of Emerald Stair Animancers by sending them to Thirdborn or Paradis.
In this Avowed guide, we explain the result of the choices you make about the Animancers during the Ancient Soil quest.
Should you Send the People of Fior to Thirdborn or Paradis?
It is a mandatory choice, and you can’t skip it. You are forced by Governor Vidarro and Pere Quilicci at the end of the Ancient Soil main quest.
At this time, Fior mes Ivèrno, the seat of the Emerald Stair region, is in pathetic condition. All of this can feel a bit frustrating as players are completely in the dark while making the decision. They might want one thing or another to happen depending on their experience in the game till now.
Regardless of the urgency around this decision, it has no serious consequences until the end of the game. Whether you send the people to Thirdborn or Paradis, you never get to see them or meet them again in the game unless you want to.
Moreover, the result of this decision is also the same whether you save Fior mes Iverno or not at the conclusion of Emerald Stair’s main quest.
And you get or lose nothing, based on your decision. So, do whatever you want to. If you are interested in knowing more about each choice, keep on reading.
All Animancer Refugee Outcomes
Choice | Result |
---|---|
Thirdborn | The Animancers go to Thirdborn to have a fresh start. This choice will affect one of your ending epilogue screens. |
Paradis | The Animancers go to Paradis which is closer the Steel Garrote, the ones who burned down their home in Ancient Soil. This choice affects one of your ending epilogue screens. |
Now, let’s go into a bit more detail about each choice and its consequences.
What Happens if You Choose Thirdborn for Animancers?

At the time of the decision, Thirdborn seems a better choice, as players believe that Paradis would be a bad place for Animancers.
Players don’t know about Dreamscourge, as it is the third place they’ll visit in their bid to save people from infection. Apparently, it looks that the Animancers of Fior are doing well in Thirdborn.
As the game progresses, players will have to make another choice that will impact the Animancers. This choice comes during the Shadows of the Past main quest, and both options lead to deaths.
If you side with Ryngrim, it will lead to immediate deaths. If you side with Lödwyn, nothing happens instantly, but people will die and suffer with the passage of time. The choice you make during the Shadow of the Past quest seems irrelevant, as people will suffer anyway.
What Happens if You Choose Paradis for Animancers?

Players have already explored Paradis in the game and know that it is not a good place for Animancers. It is filled with despair and hatred for animancy.
The Steel Garrote people are also in Paradis, and they destroyed Fior in the first place, making it a more worrying choice to make for the Animancers.
But making this decision avoids what happens to the people of Fior in Thirdborn. It will also save them from random deaths if players opt to sever the Adra during the Shadows of the Past quest. You can go back to Paradis if you want and meet the governor.
But this is not as simple as it appears. There will be consequences later on in the game, especially if you decide to make the Living Lands independent.
During the final quest, the governor will confess that some of the people have disappeared. Moreover, the people of Paradis are not as welcoming towards the Animancers as you thought. However, as the time progresses, they do get some praise for their agricultural knowledge.
Ending Sequences Based on Your Decision
The choice you make for the Animancers leads to a special illustration during the ending. Here is how these screens appear.
- Thirdborn: After all their troubles, you learn that the Animancers, or what was left of them, made strong bonds with the people of Thirdborn as they had a common cause of finding a living in Shatterscarp.
- Paradis: You learn that the Animancers faced problems first as the locals hated them and they couldn’t practice animancy. However, as the time passed, their farming skills and knowledge made others respect them.
