Grimoires in Avowed are magical off-hand gear that functions like spell-book. They let you cast a narrow selection of spells without needing to commit to learning them from the wizard ability tree.
Basically, when you equip one of these Grimoire you unlock the built-in spells — each with its own cost and cooldown — that you can use directly in battle.
They also play a role as a secondary weapon (sometimes on Unique Shields), which adds in the option of swapping them in and out based on your tactical needs, and they come in different qualities (from common to unique) that dictate their performance and potential to be upgraded.
