The Asus ROG Ally requires users to wait 10–15 minutes before Doom: The Dark Ages becomes playable after its initial launch and once you are in, the game performance changes substantially based on the selected resolution and game settings.
The default 1080p setting in the game produces only 25 FPS which makes it unplayable for first-person shooter games but applying optimizations leads to better performance on ROG Ally.
The combination of AMD’s FSR in Ultra Performance mode with Frame Generation technology results in a significant performance increase which delivers frame rates above 60 FPS at native 1080p resolution.
The FSR Frame Gen technology adds a small amount of input delay which some users might notice but the gameplay remains responsive enough that it won’t really matter to most players and in my opinion this is the best way to play it given the performance and optimization of this game.
The performance increases to 70–80+ FPS when we reduce the screen resolution to 900p or 720p although this results in less detailed graphics.
If you are a player who want clear visuals you should choose 1080p while those who want smooth gameplay can select lower resolutions.
Note: Increase VRAM to 8GB on Asus ROG Ally.

Performance Benchmarks by Resolution
Resolution | FSR Setting | Frame Gen | FPS Range | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1080p | Off (default) | Off | ~25 FPS | Default settings, sluggish and not enjoyable. |
1080p | FSR Ultra Perf | Off | ~40–45 FPS | Significant improvement; smoother gameplay. |
1080p | FSR Ultra Perf | On | ~60+ FPS | Very smooth and playable; minor latency increase possible. |
900p | FSR Ultra Perf | On | ~70+ FPS | Noticeable visual drop; good balance of performance and quality. |
720p | FSR Ultra Perf | On | ~80+ FPS | Exceptional FPS, but visual fidelity takes a heavy hit. |

To get the best overall experience on the ROG Ally you should play Doom: The Dark Ages at 1080p resolution with FSR set to Ultra Performance and Frame Generation enabled.
The selected settings allow for a smooth 60+ FPS gameplay experience while maintaining excellent visual quality. The performance in challenging scenes becomes better when users disable depth of field and chromatic aberration and motion blur and reduce shadows and lighting and reflections.
Players who want maximum framerate can select 900p or 720p resolution to achieve up to 80 FPS but this will reduce visual quality. The best combination for most players is 1080p resolution with optimized settings which provides both smooth gameplay and solid visuals and a complete Doom experience on the ROG Ally.
