2025 has been full of surprises for the game industry. Between hits like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, Dispatch, and more, plenty of games have left their mark on the industry this year. On the other hand, the likes of MindsEye have shown a different side of the industry, receiving widespread criticism.
Activision’s recently released Black Ops 7 has become yet another release of the industry to be widely criticized by the fans. Although not nearly as big a disaster as MindsEye, this title has now become Metacritic’s worst user-rated game of 2025.
As shown above, Black Ops 7 ends up in last place when sorting Metacritic’s games released in 2025 by user reviews and viewing the last page. The game has somehow ended up being rated worse than even MindsEye, which was a technical disaster by all definitions.
In fact, MindsEye’s situation was so bad that the game’s release was followed by reports of internal mismanagement at the studio and layoffs. Despite plans to support the game for 10 years, MindsEye effectively put a halt to Build a Rocket Boy’s long-term ambitions.
On the other hand, Black Ops 7 has been largely criticized for its campaign. The game has racked up nearly 1,000 reviews on Metacritic in just over a day, with the user score averaging out at 1.7 compared to MindsEye’s score of 2.5. Of course, Black Ops 7 still launched without major technical hiccups or game-breaking issues, so it is interesting to see it falling below what many consider the worst release of the year.
Many die-hard Call of Duty fans also appear to be enjoying the game’s multiplayer and zombies, but it seems many have become frustrated with the state of the franchise in 2025. Elsewhere, notable releases like EA Sports FC 26, Remedy’s FBC: Firebreak, Vampire The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A are found on the list of Metacritic’s worst user-rated titles. As the list shows, Black Ops 7 takes the top spot by a wide margin, with no other game on the list having a score anywhere close to 2.0.
