There seems to be no end to the criticisms surrounding Black Ops 7. Treyarch’s latest Call of Duty outing has become a big example of what not to do for an annual franchise, with criticisms mainly targeting the outlandish campaign offering this year.
In the aftermath, Black Ops 7 is being review-bombed on Metacritic. Although user reviews on the platform have only been live for a few hours, the game is already Call of Duty’s worst-rated entry on the platform by user reviews.

Currently, Black Ops 7 has a user score of just 2.0 on Metacritic. This is a significant decline over last year’s entry, which landed on a score of 6.2 after thousands of reviews.
Of course, this is not the first time a Call of Duty title has been review-bombed by the masses on Metacritic. 2023’s Modern Warfare 3 saw similar negativity, but Black Ops 7’s current user score has fallen even lower than Modern Warfare 3’s user rating of 2.3.
Going over the user reviews, the game has received plenty of 0/10s and 1/10s. Reviews point to the campaign as the biggest negative of the entire experience, with some even dubbing it the worst Call of Duty campaign of all time. Others have pointed to the seemingly dysfunctional non-SBMM playlists on launch day.
As expected, the game has also been compared to Modern Warfare 3 in these reviews, with Modern Warfare 3 somehow coming out on top. Certain reviews have also acknowledged that Black Ops 7’s multiplayer and zombies are plus points, with the campaign dragging down the entire experience.

There seems to be a general sense of negativity around Call of Duty this year, with the Steam reviews telling a similar story. Over on Steam, the game has landed on a ‘Mixed’ rating, owing to a slew of negative reviews.
Between the use of AI-generated art, a poor campaign, and contentions around the current state of multiplayer matchmaking, Black Ops 7 has been buried under plenty of criticism. Interestingly, however, the game’s critical reception tells a completely different story, with most reviewers having positive things to say about the experience.
