Marvel has gone all-in on games lately, and with upcoming titles like Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, the company is only expected to push further into the gaming industry.
However, Marvel is not without its failures. In particular, Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers from 2020 continues to remain one of the most disappointing superhero games in recent memory, mainly due to its clashing philosophy of merging Marvel’s stories with a live-service model.
Although the game was supported for nearly three years after its release, it was ultimately deemed a failure by both Marvel and Square Enix and later shut down. Reflecting on this failure, Jeff Schine, the voice of Captain America in Marvel’s Avengers, recently discussed his experience working on the project. He also noted that it would have been a lot more impactful as a single-player title.
Speaking to Dan Allen, Jeff Schine stated that he still looks back on Marvel’s Avengers quite fondly, particularly due to his experience working with the likes of Sandra Saad.
According to the voice actor, the project was no less than a dream come true, and it had a lot of potential. Jeff Schine admitted that the pursuit of live-service ultimately led to the game’s failure, but he also noted that the team had come up with many interesting stories for the project.
In fact, Jeff Schine proposed an episodic release format for the different stories in Marvel’s Avengers to mimic a comic book-like style of storytelling. The voice actor shared that the writers and director showed incredible enthusiasm before launch, which would have been perfect for a narrative-focused adventure based on the Marvel characters.
“I think we had a very very strong story, a really great campaign.” -Jeff Schine
Later in the interview, the voice actor confirmed that he would love to reprise the role of Captain America in the future. Jeff Schine admitted that he wasn’t particularly fond of Captain America before being selected for the role in Marvel’s Avengers, but since then, he has fallen in love with the character and his stories.
Although Captain America has yet to receive his own solo Marvel game, Avenger’s Doomsday could be the catalyst to Marvel greenlighting such a project. Note that Skydance New Media is also working on a game starring both Black Panther and Captain America, but the character has yet to be the focus on a major AAA release like Spider-Man or Wolverine.
