Diablo II: Resurrected released in 2021 as a remaster of the 2000 original. Now, Blizzard has released Diablo II: Resurrected – Infernal Edition for PC, which includes the 2021 remaster and the Lord of Destruction expansion. However, PC players are having a hard time playing it, as it crashes randomly while playing. Here, I have compiled a list of fixes that will resolve the Diablo 2: Resurrected – Infernal Edition crashes on your Windows PC.
4 Ways to Fix Diablo II Resurrected – Infernal Edition Crash
PC players report that the Infernal Edition of Diablo 2 Resurrected keeps crashing to the desktop without any error message. There are multiple reasons for these gameplay crashes, like bloated registry files interfering with the game, your PC hardware being unable to handle your preferred graphics preset, playing Diablo 2 at an unlocked FPS, and more. The following fixes will resolve the gameplay crash issue in Diablo 2 Resurrected – Infernal Edition on your PC.
Fix #1 – Clean Up Windows Registry and Run Diablo 2 as an Administrator (Verified)
The bloated registry of your Windows OS is causing Diablo 2 Resurrected to crash on your PC during gameplay. You can fix the crashes by clearing the registry and running Diablo 2 as an administrator. PC users confirm that clearing the registry fixes the crashes. I also suggest that you run the SFC and DISM scans to repair critical system files.
To clear the Windows Registry of leftover entries, use Revo Uninstaller. However, back up your current Registry settings. Here is how you can back up the registry and run SFC and DISM scans:
- Type “Registry Editor” in Windows Search and open Registry Editor.
- Click the “File” button from the top menu, select the “Export” option, and select where you want to back up the saves.
- After that, use the Registry cleaning tool to clean up invalid registry entries.
- Open CMD and run it as an administrator.
- Type sfc /scannow, press Enter, and let the scan complete.
- After that, type DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter.

Once you have cleaned the Registry and repaired System Files, run Dibalo 2 as an administrator to fix the gameplay crashes on PC. Here is how you can run Diablo 2 Resurrected as an administrator:
- In your Steam Library, right-click Diablo 2: Resurrected – Infernal Edition and go to Manage.
- After that, click the Browse local files option.
- In the new explorer window that just popped up, navigate to Highguard\Binaries\Win64.
- Right-click the executable (.exe) and select Properties.
- Head to the Compatibility tab and check the “Run this program as an administrator” option.
- Continue playing Diablo2, and the in-game crashes are now fixed.

Fix #2 – Play Diablo 2 Resurrected with Optimized Graphics Settings (NVIDIA)
Some PC players like to play games at Ultra settings, and I am one of them. If you are playing Diablo 2 Resurrected at high or Ultra graphics settings, it is the reason for the gameplay crashes you are experiencing.
You can fix the crashes by playing Diablo 2 with optimized graphics settings, as it reduces the GPU load. Here is how you can force optimized graphics settings in Diablo 2:
- Open the Nvidia App on your PC and navigate to the Graphics section.
- Select Diablo 2 Resurrected and click the “Optimize” button.
- After that, continue playing Diablo 2, and it won’t crash during gameplay.

Fix #3 – Play Diablo 2 Resurrected With an FPS Limit
If lowering the graphics settings isn’t an option for you, like me, then limit Diablo 2 Resurrected’s max FPS to fix crashes on your PC. Playing games at an unlocked FPS puts the GPU and CPU under a lot of stress, which results in games crashing while playing.
You can use Diablo 2 Resurrected’s in-game FPS slider to limit the FPS and fix the crashes.
- Open Dibalo 2’s option menu.
- Go to the “Video” tab.
- Use the “Framerate Cap” slider under “Display” to set a lower FPS value.
- Continue playing Diablo 2 Resurrected, and the in-game crash issue is fixed.

Fix #4 – Revert Graphics Card Overclock
If you have overclocked your graphics card, then it is the reason Diablo 2 Resurrected keeps crashing on your PC. Overclocking your PC hardware can get you a little bit more in-game performance, but it also puts the hardware under a lot of stress, which results in games crashing to the desktop. Revert your graphics card to its default clocks and voltage to fix the in-game crash issue on Diablo 2 on your PC.
Even if you have not overclocked the graphics card yourself, it’s likely that it is running on higher clocks and voltages. Most graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD AIB partners, like Zotac, MSI, ASUS, use higher GPU and Memory clocks and voltages, albeit slightly, compared to their respective reference models. These higher clocks are crashing Dibalo 2 on your PC, and you can fix it by forcing your graphics card to use its recommended clocks.
For NVIDIA graphics cards, this can be done easily by enabling the Debug Mode in the NVIDIA App or Control Panel. The Debug Mode forces the graphics card to use the recommended clock speeds for the particular model, which reduces the GPU load and fixes Diablo 2 crashes. Here is how you can enable the Debug Mode:
- Open the NVIDIA App and go to the “System” tab.
- Go to the “Advanced” tab.
- Enable the “Debug Mode”.
- Continue playing Diablo II, and the crashes are fixed.

If you haven’t installed the NVIDIA App, then you can enable the Debug Mode through the NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Click the “Help” button from the top menu.
- Select the “Debug Mode” option.
