I never really expected Elden Ring to have multiplayer mode but with Nightreign we have it. And while it is really fun to play there are certain rules that everyone should know about.

Elden Ring Nightreign matchmaking isn’t as simple as some other games you might be used to playing. And to be honest some of the rules around matchmaking are a bit annoying but don’t worry, I will explain it all in this guide so that you are prepared to take the fight to the Night Lords.

Oh and don’t forget to read my guide on the fastest ways to revive teammates because if you’re planning to play multiplayer you’re to need it.

How Elden Ring Nightreign Matchmaking Works

To start matchmaking head over to the Roundtable Hold and interact with the Table of Grace. This will give you access to the Expeditions menu where you select the Night Lord you want to face before starting to look for players.

The game will try to find two other players who want to face the same boss as you. And if you guy match, the game will start. So what’s frustrating about this?

Well, the first Night Lord you face is Tricephalos and you have to beat him to get access to other bosses. So matchmaking options become limited. Most of the time players who are just starting out will end up facing this boss solo.

The other side of this is that players looking for help beating other Night Lords can’t matchmake with you because you don’t have access to them yet.

So you have to beat Tricephalos either solo or matchmake if you can to beat it.

Workaround: Use party invites to create your own party.

After defeating Tricephalos you will gain access to new content which includes Shifting Earth events. The game features Shifting Earth events that function as unpredictable world transformations which create different effects during each expedition.

You can join someone else’s game that has a Shifting Earth event going even if you haven’t unlocked it yourself—but you must have experienced that specific event at least once before on your own.

So basically:

  • But once you’ve encountered it once, you can join others who have it active.
  • If you’ve never seen a particular Shifting Earth event, you can’t match into a session with it.

How to Play with Players from Other Regions

If options are limited on your server, your region, then you need to enable cross-region network option in the game. This allows you to match with players from other regions, opening up the variety of Night Lords you can face in Elden Ring Nightreign.
