Elden Ring Nightreign builds upon the foundations of Elden Ring 2022, but offers a very different experience. Additionally, Nightreign uses the same underlying tech as its predecessor. On PC, the game is experiencing technical issues, including white screen crashes at startup, stuttering, and freezing during gameplay. I have compiled a couple of fixes that will resolve the Elden Ring Nightreign stuttering and freezing issues on your Windows PC.

Working Fixes for Elden Ring Nightreign Stuttering on PC

PC users report that the game stutters or freezes constantly during gameplay, which breaks immersion and takes the fun out of it. That is, if you even get the game running, as a lot of players report that Elden Ring Nightreign is crashing at startup.

There are multiple reasons you are experiencing these gameplay stutters and freezes, like the NVIDIA resource monitor interfering with the game, or in-game vsync not working properly. The following fixes will resolve the Elden Ring Nightreign stuttering and freezing issue on your PC.

Fix # 1 – Delete PresentMon_x64.exe or Block It

PC users report that NVDIIA’s resource monitor process is causing random stuttering and freezing in the game. There are two ways you can fix the stutters: by deleting the “PresentMon_x64.exe” file or blocking it from running.

To delete the “PresentMon_x64.exe” file, go to C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\FrameViewSDK\bin\ and delete the file. However, deleting the file might cause unexpected issues with your NVIDIA GPU driver or PC.

I recommend that you change the security permissions for the “PresentMon_x64.exe” file to fix gameplay stutters and freezes in Elden Ring Nightreign. Here is how you can change security permissions:

  • Navigate to C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\FrameViewSDK\bin\
  • Right-click the “PresentMon_x64.exe” file and select the “properties” option.
  • Go to the “Security” tab and click the “Edit” button.
  • Click the “Add…” button.
  • Type “Everyone” in the small window that opens, and click the “OK” button.
  • Click the “Apply” button, and then click the “OK” button.
  • Click once on “Everyone” under “Group or user names:” and press the “Advanced” button under “Permissions for SYSTEM”.
  • Double-click “Everyone” under “Principal”.
  • Select the “Deny” option from the drop-down menu in front of “Type”.
  • After that, click the “Show advanced permissions” option.
  • Uncheck all options except for “Traverse folder / execute file”.
  • Press OK and close all tabs.
  • This will block the NVIDIA resource monitor from running, and the stuttering in Elden Ring Nightreign is fixed.

Fix #2 – Force Vertical Synchronization Through NVIDIA Control Panel

Based on community feedback, forcing Vertical Synchronization (vsync) through the NVIDIA Control Panel fixes the stutters in Elden Ring Nightreign. Here is how you can force vsync:

  • Open the Nvidia Control Panel.
  • Click the “Manage 3D settings” option from the left menu.
  • Open the “Program settings” tab, and select “Elden Ring Nightreign” from the drop-down menu.
  • Scroll through the options and find the “Vertical Synchronization” option. Select “On”.
  • Apply the changes, and the gameplay stutters will be fixed.

Fix #3 – Select Proper Refresh Rate for Elden Ring Nightreign

Another reason you might be experiencing stuttering is your monitor’s refresh rate, which, in fact, is jittering due to the mismatched frame rate and refresh rate. Elden Ring Nightreign is hard locked at 60 FPS on PC, and if you are playing the game on a high refresh rate monitor, like 144Hz, with vsync enabled, this is causing the jittering.

You can fix the stutters or jitters by making sure the refresh rate of the monitor is exactly the same as the FPS or twice that of the FPS value. This means that, for 60 FPS in Elden Ring Nightreign, the refresh rate must be 60 Hz or 120 Hz, if you have vsync enabled.

If you are using a Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) monitor, i.e, Gsync or FreeSync supported display, you don’t need to worry about the refresh rate.

That is all for our fixes for the stutters and freezes in Elden Ring Nightreign on PC. If you are experiencing errors and crashes in games, also see our fixes hub for commonly occurring errors for PC and handhelds.
