Something fishy is happening over at the Epic Games Store. The popular Steam “alternative” is reportedly directing users to third part malicious websites that are fake, and possibly contain malware.
Users on Reddit reported in the last 24 hours how they are being redirected to third party websites through the store’s search feature; “Top Results from Other Stores.”
Here’s an example from one of the users who was redirected to a fake Dark Souls website.
A quick Whois Search reveals that the owner of the fake Dark Souls website owns multiple other fake websites including 1kea, dockdockgo, airbnbchina.
Another user reported that the same search page has another malicious link for Epic’s launcher “EpicGamesLauncherInstaller.msi.” That link is also removed by the store.
At the time of this writing, Epic has fixed these links, but the issue seems to stem from Epic’s use of third party data without proper control.
As far as we can tell there are no other shady links on Epic Store for the time being but if you are an Epic Games Store user, be careful what you click on. Especially, if you are looking for a game that is not officially available on the store because the store links out to other retailers who sometimes might not be legit.
