PlayStation’s surprising shift away from PC ports has taken the industry by surprise. With multiple reports of PC port cancellations flooding in recently, PC gamers can effectively wave first-party titles from the gaming giant goodbye.
Many have recently debated on PlayStation’s motive behind this potential shift. While some believe the gaming giant feels threatened by the upcoming Xbox, a former Bluepoint Games developer believes Valve is the culprit here.

In a recent post on Twitter/X, former Bluepoint Games Head of Technology Peter Dalton discussed how Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine has the potential to upset the balance between console and PC gaming.
He believes that the Steam Machine could effectively eliminate the main hurdle of the PC market by offering a console-like experience while retaining the strengths of the PC ecosystem, the hardware could pose a real threat to PlayStation.
Peter Dalton believes the Steam Machine would have offered the best of both worlds in a scenario where gamers could access PlayStation’s first-party library on the PC-console hybrid.
“If Sony were releasing all of its games day-and-date on PC, the Steam console could effectively offer the best of all worlds: console simplicity with the full breadth of PC gaming.” -Peter Dalton
Interestingly enough, former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra is of the same belief, suggesting that the Steam Machine is a real threat to PlayStation’s high-end console dominance.
Towards the end of his tweet, Peter Dalton also remarked that it would be quite ironic if Valve ended up being the winner of the console war.
Traditionally, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo have competed for console dominance. Valve has previously tried its hand at console gaming, but its latest attempt comes after major upgrades to SteamOS. The gaming giant has also learned a great deal from its experience with the Steam Deck, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for console gaming and competition in this segment.
