Forza Horizon 4 is the best-regarded entry in the franchise, however, the game has been delisted from all platforms. Those who bought the game can and are still enjoying the game. Despite being a well-optimized game, PC users are experiencing errors and issues with it like in-game crashes, trigger rumble not working, application-specific permission error, and more. I have compiled a list of fixes that help you resolve the Forza Horizon 4 crash on your Windows PC.

5 Fixes to Resolve Forza Horizon 4 In-Game Crash

PC users report that the game crashes to the desktop randomly while playing. There are multiple reasons for this like overclocked GPU, third-party tools interfering with the game, playing it at an unlocked FPS, and more. The following are the fixes that will help you fix the FH4 crash on your PC.

Fix #1 – Disable Third Party Tools

Third-party programs, tools, and software can be useful due to their features, such as providing performance stats, recording gameplay, and more. However, they can also interfere with the game and force Forza Horizon 4 to crash to the desktop. You can fix the FH4 in-game crash by disabling any third-party tools you have installed.

The developers at Playground Games have noted that the following third-party apps can interfere with the game.

  • MSI Afterburner
  • Riva Tuner
  • Logitech G Hub
  • OBS
  • MacType
  • EVGA Precision
  • Xsplit
  • A-Volute Sound Studio
  • Wallpaper Engine
  • Warsaw Banking App
  • WeMod
  • SeeThroughWindows
  • Interception (Driver)
  • Nahimic (Audio Driver)

Other third-party apps can also force FH4 to crash in-game. Disable them, and the error will be fixed.

Fix #2 – Disable GPU Overclocking

Overclocking PC hardware like GPU, CPU, and RAM allows PC users to get more juice out of them. While this may boost performance, it can also make the game unstable and cause it to crash. To fix the FH4 in-game crash, revert the graphics card to its default GPU and Memory Clocks.

Fix #3 – Use Recommended GPU and Memory Clocks

Graphics cards from third-party AIB partners, like Zotac or GIGABYTE, are causing Forza Horizon 4 to crash while playing. The reason is that these graphics cards are often factory overclocked or use higher GPU and Memory Clocks compared to the reference models. While higher clocks boost performance, they also force the game to crash.

You can fix the issue by enabling the Debug Mode, which forces the graphics card to use Nvidia’s recommended GPU and Memory Clocks. To do this, open the Nvidia Control Panel, click Help from the top menu bar, and select Debug Mode from this menu. This will fix the in-game crash issue with Forza Horizon 4.

How to enable NVidia debug mode on Windows.
Open the Nvidia Control Panel and click on “Help”. Select Debug Mode.

Fix #4 – Limit Max Frame Rate

When you play games at a high or unlocked frame rate, the visuals look smooth and significantly reduce input latency. However, it can also put a lot of stress on the GPU and the CPU, resulting in Forza Horizon 4 crashing while in-game. If you are playing FH4 at an unlocked or high FPS, it is causing the crashes. You can limit the game’s max FPS to reduce the load on the GPU and CPU, and this will fix the issue. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Go to Nvidia Control Panel.
  • Click “Manage 3D Settings” in the left-hand side menu.
  • Click the Program Settings tab and select Forza Horizon 4 from the dropdown menu.
  • Scroll down, enable “Max Frame Rate” and set a value.
How to limit FPS in games on PC using the Nvidia Control Panel.
Go to “Manage 3D Settings” > Select the game > enable the “Max Frame Rate” option and set a value for it.

Please note that unless you use a FreeSync or G-Sync display, the max frame limit should be set to 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 of your monitor’s refresh rate. If you use any other value, the game will appear jittery.

Fix #5 – Update the GPU Driver

An outdated or incompatible GPU driver is crashing Forza Horizon 4. To fix the in-game crash issue, update or install a different driver version. Make sure you do a clean installation so settings from the last installation won’t interfere with the new one.
