In Age of Mythology: Retold, choosing the right pantheon god will greatly affect how your game plays out, since every god will have its own unique units, bonuses and advancements to speed up your civilization’s evolution.

(THIS tier list reflects the current meta and can change due to future patches).

So, with that being said, here is a breakdown of each god, focusing on the S and A-Tier gods, whom are the most beneficial in Age of Mythology: Retold.

Set | S-Tier God

Set is for units made from Barracks, which means that you will build up an enormous army extremely quickly and aggressively.

His units are usually also quicker, making early-game harassment easier for him, and giving more map control. One of Set’s powers unique to him is the ability to summon animals by spending Favor, which is a powerful buff against base enemy units.

Furthermore, after aging up players get a flock of summoned beasts at the Temple. Military buildings controlled by Set cost 25% less, enabling faster and more aggressive growth.

The cost reduction also means Set is especially good for building the Migdol Stronghold and allows for faster upgrades to the Mythic Age.

Set has a Vision god power that is free to recast which allows him to scout and keep track of enemy movement.

Similar to the early cited civilizations matrix, the key to developing as Set is to build up the economy with farmers, trade and abundant food supplies early on, in order to gain myth units with larger armies of basic units.

Kronos | S Tier God

Kronos is a major deity in Age of Mythology: The Titans whose playstyle revolves around mobility and the element of surprise. His skills and positioning for strategy place him in B-Tier alongside pantheon gods.

Kronos has the unique “Time Shift” ability that allows players at a low cost to shift their buildings around the map. It allows for strategic repositionings of military structures, allowing nodes to pull surprise attacks and adapt rapidly to battlefield dynamics without putting Citizens at risk during the construction of nodes.

Kronos uses the “Deconstruction” god power, which can disband parts of the enemy’s buildings and return resources to the other player while stalling their row of infrastructure for a short period of time. This capability can keep enemy strategy aligned out of wack, which disrupts their progress or leaves them vulnerable.

A-Tier Gods | Hades, Isis, Zeus, Odin

Hades

Hades is one of the major Greek Gods, master of archery. His units gain powerful bonuses (to their archers, specifically) that can help make them deadly in ranged encounters. Hades adds +1 range to ranged heroes and soldiers.

One of the special powers of Hades is being able to summon Shades whenever an enemy unit dies, and these servants spawn near the closest Temple and can reinforce troops, but in the early game, it’s only the grunts needed to soak damage for the true army units. Hades’ buildings ability grants their structures increased range, particularly +2-range to structures that shoot, enhancing Towers’ and Fortresses’ defensive capabilities.

Additionally, Hades gets technologies like Ballistics and Burning Pitch in the Heroic and Mythic Age, without you having to worry about it.

He also has access to several of the strongest Myth Units in the game, with +20% hit points. Minor gods like Ares can give you better ranged damage or Apollo who heals Myth Units.

Isis

Isis is strong in Food production, which means faster aging up and quicker military unit production. Her ability to build Monuments in 50% less time as other Gods helps secure crucial land early in the game, giving access to powerful God powers and technologies.

Isis’ Monuments block enemy god powers; depending on where you place them, you can stop your enemies from using their God Powers.

Increased nutrition through food production and faster building of the Monument, strike a powerful economic basis. Picking Anubis as Isis’ secondary god unlocks powerful Anubites, useful frontliners who absorb damage while main units deal damage.

Zeus

Zeus is great for infantry and myth unit bonuses. Two of his god powers are Bolt, which allows him to instantly kill an enemy unit, and Underworld Passage, which allows fast troop movement on the map. Zeus generates Favor quickly, which allows for the prompt recruitment of myth units and heroes.

He also has powerful heroes with high mobility like Bellerophon at his disposal. The lesser gods like Athena confer defensive bonuses, while there’s cavalry support from Dionysus. Zeus can also generate powerful myth units in the late game too, including high damage dealing Colossi, Manticores, and Centaurs.

Odin

Odin is one of the main Norse gods in this game. He is all about military power and people who use brains over brawn.

Odin’s most important building is the Great Hall. Here you build your soldiers.

The Great Hall creates strong soldiers like Hersirs or Valkyries. It can also make these buildings more quickly than any unit in the game.

Odin has a special power called “Raven.” This lets you see over large portions of the map at once. It is very helpful for finding out what your enemies are doing and where they are going.

Odin is good in battle. His soldiers, especially footsoldiers, are sturdy and diverse. Some of his best units include Berserkers and Hersirs both of which can be used for attack and defense.

Odin can also use special mythical creatures in his army. This makes his army even stronger and more flexible.

Playing as Odin means being aggressive. You want to attack early and keep pushing on your opponents. You can do this with Odin because he can make troops so quickly.

The footsoldiers of Odin are really good. Both Berserkers and Valkyries are strong attackers and can take a lot of punishment as well.

Lastly, when playing as Odin you can choose from various minor gods to aid yourself. Each of them offers different benefits. For instance, if you choose Freyja then your men may heal themselves while if Njord is selected he will help your economy.
