The God of War franchise has been through one major shake-up over the years, but PlayStation has never been afraid to try new things with the series.
Most recently, the 2D platformer spin-off God of War Sons of Sparta took the series in a new direction, and reports have now pointed to yet another shakeup for the IP. It is said that the next mainline God of War project, directed by Cory Barlog, will star Faye, the wife of Kratos from the Norse saga, as the lead character.
Reacting to this information, the God of War creator has recently expressed his excitement for the future of the franchise, stating that he looks forward to what is coming next.
Not too long ago, God of War creator and director David Jaffe discussed the rumors surrounding God of War’s next title and their implications for the series’ future.
Discussing the role of Faye as the protagonist of Cory Barlog’s next big project, David Jaffe stated that the game sounds promising so far. In particular, the God of War creator seems more enthusiastic about the prospect of Faye as a character compared to Atreus.
This is interesting since past rumors discussed the possibility of Atreus being in the lead role. According to the developer, Atreus’ character and design would need a major overhaul if this were to end up being the case. Anyhow, he seems enthusiastic about the rumors regarding Faye so far.
David Jaffe was also glad to hear the Devil May Cry comparisons, admitting that the more action-focused approach would be great for the series. He noted that this type of experience would be difficult to achieve for Santa Monica Studio, given its pedigree for mainly narrative-focused adventure and high production value, but the former God of War director believes the team could still find a middle ground that works for the IP.
“Assuming it’s Faye, I think this could be awesome. I’m interested. I’m excited. Looking forward to it.” – David Jaffe
If recent reports are to be believed, this game will be officially revealed at some point in 2026 or early 2027. Santa Monica Studio is also expected to launch the game in 2027, leaving just over a year before God of War returns in all its glory.
Like David Jaffe, many around the world are excited about the game. Although Kratos’ absence might become a cause for concern among fans, Santa Monica Studio has earned the trust of millions through its work on the last two titles. Suffice it to say, God of War’s next outing has a lot of potential.
