Rockstar Games has been the center of attention recently for more than one reason. In addition to delaying GTA 6 to Fall 2026, the studio recently fired 30 employees in the UK and Canada without a warning. The latter, in particular, has brought a lot of negative attention to the studio.

According to the company, the employees were fired for ‘gross misconduct’ and ‘discussing confidential information in a public forum.’ Since then, legal action has also been taken against the studio, and a former developer has come forward with an interesting story regarding GTA 5’s development.

People Make Games recently reported on the stories of laid off Rockstar Games developers. The former developers are coming together to pursue legal action against the studio, with many expressing frustration and sadness at the recent events.

In the comments section of the same video, a former Rockstar North developer recalled similar events during the development of GTA 5 which highlight a clear pattern of behavior at Rockstar Games.

According to “ThatScwedeGuy,” the studio let go around 50 developers in a single day at one point. Shortly after, the developer also left the team.

He even recalled an instance of management stating that it would have given one of the fired workers his job had he (ThatScwedeGuy) left the studio earlier.

Perhaps the worst part about the whole ordeal was the fact that the contracted developers were asked to come into the office following the end of their contracts only to be told that they would not be given an extension.

Concluding his story, ThatScwedeGuy stated that companies like Rockstar Games do not deserve gamers’ support. Moreover, he highlighted that he no longer buys the studio’s games after witnessing his coworkers being mistreated.

Ex-GTA 5 Developer on Rockstar Games Layoffs

Rockstar Games’ current situation appears to be highlighting similar treatment of employees yet again. Many believe the latest layoffs are nothing more than an attempt at union busting, leaving an extremely negative impact on those who dedicated their time and effort to working on GTA 6.

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how the laid off employees tackle the situation. Many believe Rockstar Games can simply offer settlements and take the financial hit ahead of GTA 6’s release in 2027.

On the other hand, the laid off employees are not willing to back down easily, so many are hoping for a favorable outcome.
