GTA 6 is less than one whole year as of January 2026, but doubts about the game meeting its release window still linger within the gaming industry. Recently, much has been said about Rockstar Games’ plans for the future, including the current state of the game’s development.
An insider also states that GTA 6 will be pivotal for the PS5 when it arrives, making it not too different from the usual PlayStation exclusive in this sense.
This statement comes from Jason Schreier on a recent Spotify podcast, with the insider noting that PlayStation will be the lead platform for GTA 6. He acknowledged that the game would still sell millions of units on Xbox hardware, but the PS5’s current dominance in the market would give the latter a unique advantage.
The insider went on to note that Sony is likely to plan its entire lineup around GTA 6 in 2026. Because of how big Grand Theft Auto has become since GTA 5’s release, PlayStation is likely to treat it as a first-party release, even if the title shows up on Xbox as well.
The impact of GTA 6’s release should lead to the PS5 moving millions of units in 2026. In fact, the game is likely to leave a much larger impact on the PS5’s sales figures than any first-party title released for the console by Sony so far.

Jason Schrier also believes Sony won’t release anything around GTA 6. Of course, this isn’t too surprising, considering other developers have already commented on the threat of Rockstar Games’ upcoming behemoth and the importance of avoiding its launch window.
Nonetheless, the entire industry is now ready for Rockstar Games to unleash its latest addition to the Grand Theft Auto IP. Everyone is now hoping to see the game meet its 2026 release window without any further delays.
