This year’s Game Awards came to a close with the announcement of Highguard, a brand-new PVP hero shooter. From veteran developers behind Apex Legends and Titanfall, this hero shooter was described as something brand new for the gaming industry.

However, it didn’t take long for Highguard to be written off as yet another bland live-service hero shooter. Since its reveal, conversations regarding the game have been largely negative, and the YouTube trailer has been bombarded with dislikes. Amid the controversy, the developers remain convinced that the game will be worth everyone’s time.

Highguard

Jason McCord is a Creative Director at Wildlight Entertainment, the team that has been working on this hero shooter for the last four years.

This developer, in addition to the other members of the team, has seen plenty of negativity over the weekend, but Wildlight Entertainment’s hopes remain high. Responding to one comment about the game, the developer noted that the team has still work to do.

He stated that the game is still worth everyone’s time, but the developers must do more to convince the masses of Highguard’s appeal. Similarly, in a different response, the designer noted that the game’s quality would do the talking for itself once audiences get hands-on time with the PVP hero shooter.

“We have some work to do to show people why this game is worth their time. The game will speak for itself.” -Jason McCord

Highguard Developer On Recent Criticism

For those curious, Jason McCord has quite the resume to his name. In the past, the developer has worked on titles like the original Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: World at War, and Titanfall. Therefore, the game is certainly in good hands.

Highguard is set to launch on January 26, giving the team just over a month to convince players that its upcoming hero shooter is worth their attention. The good news is that, unlike Concord, which has become a common comparison for this PVP title, Highguard will launch as a free-to-play shooter across all platforms.

This should give it a running start, and if the title is able to survive the initial wave of negativity, it could even see a major shift in player reception.
