Before you start capturing and breeding animals, you need to unlock the necessary technology. In the Knowledge & Technology menu, find the Dawn of the New Tribe branch and unlock Animal Breeding (Pens, Traps, and Feed Processing). Each unlock costs one Tech Point. You’ll need to unlock the following:
- Pens: Required for housing animals.
- Traps: Used to capture animals.
- Feed Processing: Necessary for creating food to feed the animals.
Each of these unlocks costs one Tech Point. Once you have the necessary technology, you can craft traps at a Building Workshop.
Tip: Using the Civilization Mask helps with crafting and building.
Traps are built in the Building Workshop using the following crafting recipes.
Trap | Crafting Recipe | Animals |
---|---|---|
Small Trap | x20 Branches, x10 Clay, 5 Thick Rope | Turkeys, Parrots, Monkeys |
Medium Trap | x15 Hardwood, x5 Planks, x20 Thatch, x5 Thick Rope | Capybaras, Alpacas, Llamas, Jaguars, Snow Leopards |
How To Set Up Traps To Capture Animals
Place the trap in an area frequented by the target animal. Bait the trap with appropriate food, which can be checked in your Hunting Gallery. For example, use corn for turkeys and parrots, and potatoes for capybaras.
Move away from the trap to avoid scaring the animals. Check back after some time to see if an animal has been caught.
After catching an animal, you need to carry it back to your camp and place it in a suitable pen or coop. Note that the trap used will break after capturing an animal and will need to be repaired for future use.
Tip: You can offload some tasks to your recruited tribesmen.
Building Animal Pens
To house and breed animals, you need specific pens. These can be crafted at a Building Workshop:
- Capybara Pen: x78 Planks, x49 Thatch, x20 Thick Rope
- Turkey Coop: x30 Planks, x20 Branches, x20 Thick Rope
- Parrot Rack: x30 Branches, x15 Hardwood Planks, x10 Thick Rope
Make sure you place the captured animals in these pens. To do this, walk to the pen’s door, enter, and press R to put the animal down inside. Always close the door behind you to prevent animals from escaping.
How To Breed Animals
To breed animals, you need at least one male and one female of the same species in the same pen. You can check the animal’s gender by hovering over them. Additionally, animals require proper food and water to breed and produce resources.
Each pen comes with feed and water troughs. For other animals, craft separate troughs at the Building Workshop. Use a Water Bucket to fill the troughs with water. This bucket can be crafted at the Carpentry Table using x10 Planks, x2 Copper Wire, and x2 Wooden Handles.
Feed the animals specific foods tailored to their species. For example, turkey feed requires 2 Poisonous Bugs and 2 Locusts.
How To Make Animal Feed
Each animal has a specific type of feed:
- Turkey Feed: 2 Poisonous Bugs, 2 Locusts (optional: 2 Corn Flour, 2 Potatoes, 2 Frozen Potatoes)
- Alpaca Feed: 2 Corn (additional: 20 Fiber, 20 Vine, 20 Thatch)
- Parrot Feed: 2 Quinoa, 2 Corn Flour
- Capybara Feed: 2 Potatoes, 2 Frozen Potatoes (additional: 20 Fiber, 20 Vine, 20 Thatch)
- Ostrich Feed: 2 Corn (additional: 20 Fiber, 20 Vine, 20 Thatch)
- Llama Feed: 2 Corn (additional: 20 Fiber, 20 Vine, 20 Thatch)
Prepare these feeds using a Cooking Stove and place them in the troughs in the animal pens.
