Before you can start capturing animals, you need to unlock the required technology. This is found within the Dawn of the New Tribe branch in the Knowledge & Technology menu. You’ll need to unlock:
- Pens: Necessary for housing animals.
- Traps: Used to capture animals.
- Feed Processing: Required for creating food to attract and feed the animals.
Once you have unlocked the technology, you can craft traps at a Building Workshop. There are two main types of traps, each suited for different animals:
Trap | Crafting Recipe | Animals |
---|---|---|
Small Trap | x20 Branches, x10 Clay, 5 Thick Rope | Turkeys, Parrots, Monkeys |
Medium Trap | x15 Hardwood, x5 Planks, x20 Thatch, x5 Thick Rope | Capybaras, Alpacas, Llamas, Jaguars, Snow Leopards |
To capture animals, you need to place the traps in areas where the target animals are frequently seen.
Look for spots where the desired animals roam. It doesn’t need to be near your camp, but traps placed outside the camp radius will deteriorate over time and require regular maintenance.
Place appropriate bait inside the trap to attract animals. You can find out which bait works best for each animal in your Hunting Gallery, but you’ll need to have killed at least one of the target animals first. Drag the food/bait item into the trap.
Avoid being too close to the trap or within the animals’ sight or hearing range, as this can scare them away.
Give the animals some time to wander to the trap. Check back after a while to see if an animal has been caught.
Capturing and Transporting Animals
Once an animal is caught in the trap, carefully approach the trap to avoid startling the captured animal. If an animal is caught, you’ll have the option to pick it up. Select this option to carry the animal back to your camp.
Carry the captured animal to a designated pen, coop, or fenced area at your camp. Place the animal inside by walking to the pen’s door, entering, and pressing R to put the animal down inside. Ensure the pen door is closed to prevent the animal from escaping.
Note: The trap used will break after capturing an animal, and you’ll need to repair it before using it again.
You can then feed and breed animals in your camp.
