In Age of Mythology, you begin every new game with just four villagers and a scout (an Oracle unit if you select the Atlanteans).

Then you have to expand your civilization, with new resources, relics, enemy towns, etc. New towns developing is another big part of progress in Age of Mythology Retold.

Creating More Towns in AoM ReTold

You must first progress from the Archaic Age to the Classical Age. This transition is needed as Town Centers can only be built after reaching the Classical Age. Build a Temple (400 Food, 150 Gold) to progress from the Archaic Age.

Each Age has its own set of requirements as I laid out in the table above.

You then need to make sure you have enough resources to build a town. The cost for building a Town Center is:

  • Gold: 350
  • Wood: 350

Send one of your villagers to construct the Town Center. The chosen villager will gather the materials, constructing the Town Center.

While in the building menu, select the Town Center icon and place it somewhere on the map.

Note: Two Town Centers allow faster economic growth.

It’s best to build near resource-rich areas or to expand your territory. Once your new Town Center is built, activate auto-recruitment to ensure a steady stream of new villagers.

Each time you advance to a new age (Classical, Medieval, and so on), your Town Center build limit increases by one. Initially, you can only build one Town Center.

Each Town Center increases your population cap by 15, allowing you to train more units and villagers.

Multiple Town Centers are the best way for you to gather more resources by having villagers spread out across different locations.

More Town Centers also mean a faster rate of villager production which leads to faster economic growth.

Finding Settlements for New Town Centers

Settlements abandoned throughout the map can be transformed into Town Centers that allow players to expand their civilization without the need to build new centers from scratch — saving precious resources.

Here’s how to find and use abandoned settlements:

  • Scout the Map: Use your scout unit to explore the map thoroughly. Look for white Town Center markers on your mini-map, indicating abandoned settlements.
  • Convert Settlements: Once you locate an abandoned settlement, select a villager to convert it into a Town Center. This can be a more resource-efficient way to expand your territory.
