In the early access of Hytale, there is no mechanism introduced for direct fishing. Passive fishing is featured by using fishing traps. These traps auto catch the fish while you are away, saving your time. For future updates, there might be some changes in the fishing mechanics. Let’s see how things go in the future. But for 18th Jan,26 here’s how you can fish in Hytale.
How To Craft Fish Traps in Hytale?
If you can’t use a rod or there isn’t any mini game yet, then how do you unlock these fish traps? The first thing is you need Farmer’s Work Bench. If you don’t have a Farmer’s bench in Hytale, you can get one from a regular workbench. Just interact with any regular Work Bench and interact with it.
Get Farmer’s Workbench
Just interact with any regular Work Bench. Interacting will give you the menu where you can select different objects to craft. Under the Workbench tab, select Farmer’s Workbench to craft it using 6x Tree Trunk and 20X Plant Fibre.

Craft Fish Trap
Once you have Farmer’s Workbench in Hytale, place it anywhere you want by pressing F.
Open the workbench menu and upgrade it to Tier 2 to unlock fish traps and their baits, so you can start fishing. For the Tier 2 upgrade, you need x50 Essence of Life, x5 Wheat, x5 Lettuce, and x5 Softwood Trunks. Once upgraded, you can craft fish traps and the fishing bait as well.
Fish traps can be left empty as well, but placing bait increases the chance of catching fish.

After spending half a day catch the fish from the fish trap by pressing F.
Alternative Method For Fishing
You can also catch fish manually by attacking them and get the fish meat, but this is a time-consuming process because you have to wait.
Other than manually catching a fish, you can also use Mod Gone Fishing.
To increase your chance of getting maximum fish and a steady food suppy do the follwoing
- Place 5-10 traps near the base for steady food.
- Track Hytale for rod update
- Multiplayer: Share traps for group farms.
