Borderlands 4 launched with severe performance issues, even high-end PCs are unable to play the game above 60 FPS, even if DLSS is enabled. Aside from the low FPS issue, the game also has general traversal stutters during gameplay. This is on top of Unhandled Exception crashes and high CPU usage. However, there is a very easy and verified fix for it. Here is how you can fix stuttering in Borderlands 4 on PC.
Verified Fix for Gameplay Stutters in Borderlands 4 on PC
To fix the gameplay stutters in Borderlands 4, you need to increase the NVIDIA Shader Cache size to 100 GB. Multiple sources have reported, including PC Gamer, that increasing the Shader Cache size to 100 GB removes all stutters in the game. However, this fix only works for the NVIDIA GPU users.
This fix will only work if you have 100 GB storage free in your C drive.Otherwise, it won’t work.If you don’t have the required space free in the C drive, you’ll have to first change the location of the cache to a drive which has at least 100 GB free storage space.
Here is how you can increase the shader cache size for Borderlands 4 to fix the stutters:
- Ensure Borderlands 4 is not running on your PC.
- Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Click the “Manage 3D settings” from the left menu.
- Go to the “Global Settings” tab.
- Scroll down and find the “Shader Cache Size” setting, and select the 100 GB option.
- Apply the change.
- Play Borderlands 4 and the stuttering issue is now fixed.

The reason you are experiencing stutters during gameplay in Borderlands 4 is that Unreal Engine 5 relies heavily on shaders. When you enter a new area or cross an invisible barrier to a new area, the game loads shaders to render the new location. Since the Shader cache size below 100 GB isn’t enough for the game, previous shaders have to be replaced with new ones, which causes huge frame time spikes, resulting in gameplay stutters.
Increasing the Shader Cache Size to 100 GB gives the game ample room to store and load shaders without removing anything. This is why gameplay or traversal stutters in Borderlands 4 get fixed when you increase the Shader Cache size.
The low Shader Cache size is also the reason for the LowLevelFatalError crashes that PC players experience during the shader compilation step.
