Pokemon Legends Z-A offers its own set of starters from the Pokemon universe. When starting the game, players are presented with the choice to pick between Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile, but these three are not the only starters available throughout the game.
For fans of specific Pokemon eras, Legends Z-A allows players to obtain starters from past eras. However, the process of acquiring them is not always the same. If you’re a fan of the Kalos region and hope to add Chespin, Fennekin, or Froakie to your team, here’s a quick guide on how to find and capture them.

How To Get A Kalos Starter – Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie
To obtain the three starters, it’s important to complete Main Mission 5 – The City in the Shadow of Prism Tower. This also means that the first two side quests related to Main Mission 5 must be completed in order to unlock new Side Missions and open up Pokemon Legends Z-A’s world.
Completing this quest unlocks various new Side Missions, including those related to the Kalos starters. The good news is that, unlike with the Kanto starters, you don’t have to pick between the three Kalos Pokemon since each one has a specific side mission. In theory, you could have all three on the same team for Water, Fire, and Grass-type elements.
Chespin’s Location in Pokemon Legends Z-A: Side Mission 07 A Feisty Chespin

Chespin’s location is marked on the map near Rogue Sector 2 on the northern side of Lumiose. For easy access to the location, simply fast-travel to the Centrico Pokemon Center or Restaurant Le Wow.
Completing the mission is also quite easy. You must talk to Axi and then battle Chespin three times, which will then lead to the level 14 Pokemon joining your team. Make sure to come prepared with a Fire or Flying-type Pokemon at level 14 or higher for the greatest chances of success.
Fennekin Location in Pokemon Legends Z-A: Side Mission 08 – Get Well, Fennekin

Adding Fennekin to your party requires the most work. Side Mission 8 can be initiated by heading to Magenta Sector 2, which is in the northwest area of Lumiose. Use the Magenta Plaza fast travel spot to reach this location quickly.
Here, you’ll talk to Branche and find a sick Fennekin that needs a Revitalizing Twig. First, however, you must visit the herbalist at Cafe Classe, Branche informs you about. To get to this location quickly, you can fast travel to the Vernal Pokemon Center or Cafe Woof.
The herbalist will reveal that a Revitalizing Twig can be found in an area located in Wild Zone 5. Before heading here, it’s advised to find a Water-type Pokemon needed to clear the sludge littered throughout the area.

After arriving at the location, find the two benches next to the tall lamp and head right, and follow the path to take the ladder to the lower section. You must also clear the sludge in front of the benches before you can proceed.
You should then see a tunnel-like entrance blocked with more sludge. Simply clear it and proceed straight ahead to reach the area with the Revitalizing Twig.
Here, you’ll see multiple Twig markers, but the one needed for the mission is found after climbing the ladder shown below. Do note that checking all the marked spots in the area might be needed to trigger this specific Revitalizing Twig.
Also, you’ll run into a level 28 Alpha Whirlipede here, so avoiding the battle for the time being is recommended. After acquiring the Revitalizing Twig, simply return to Fennekin, and you will have your second Kalos starter in Pokemon Legends Z-A.
Froakie Location in Pokemon Legends Z-A: Side Mission 09 – A Challenge From Froakie

This side mission is located north of the Jaune Pokemon Center on North Boulevard in the northeast of Lumiose and can be started by talking to Surv.
Here, you must beat Froakie’s parkour time on a series of three platforming challenges within a set time limit. The first course is the easiest and entails climbing a few ladders and structures and walking across narrow beams to reach Froakie.
Upon completion, Surv reveals that a second course must be completed, with the time limit being 40 seconds now. This course requires more careful movement than the last since the beams are narrower and longer this time around.
They are also greater in numbers, and at certain points, it’s best to slowly walk across them to avoid sudden falls that reset your progress. Don’t worry about the timer too much and focus simply on navigating the beams in this course.

The third course requires navigating the scaffolding within 50 seconds. After climbing the first ladder, you might be confused, but dodge-rolling across the small gap will lead you to the next platform.
Then, you must climb the ladder on the right and carefully navigate the narrow beams on the platform directly below. Upon completion, Froakie will join your party.
Do note that all three Pokemon can also be found out in the wild much later on. However, for those who are fans of the Kalos starters, it’s best to complete Side Missions 7,8, and 9 to obtain them as soon as possible.
