Resources in any survival game are the most important aspect of survival. Frostpunk 2’s wasteland is no different, here you need to horde everything you can find to fight off the cold, especially fuel.
Fuel will increase your comfort levels in Fronstpunk 2 by generating more heat. Yes, to get more heat you need to farm fuel but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
You also need to keep fuel and heat production in mind when building districts. Unlike the first game, you need to manage entire districts now so obviously heat requirements go through the roof the more you expand.
How to Get More Fuel
Start by building Extraction Districts around coal deposits. This allows you to gather coal faster in Frostpunk 2. You can expand these districts to increase their output and build Coal Mines or Advanced Coal Mines for more extraction.
Send expeditions to discover additional coal deposits. Look for locations like the Meagre Coal Mine, which can provide a steady supply once connected to your city.
Lastly, enact laws that optimize fuel consumption and production. For example, Heat Recycling reduces heat demand in Housing Districts, while Weather-Adjusted Shifts lowers heat demand in non-Housing Districts.
Fuel in Frostpunk 2 comes in three types: Oil, coal, and steam. Fuel sources are usually far away from the city center and usually you can’t reach them without Frostbreak.
Once you reach a fuel source place an Extraction District to gather fuel.
Generator Upgrades
Generators play a big role in maintain heat and electricity and when things are tough you can always boost your generators output. Generator in the city comes with an overdrive feature but using it only when needed is the best option; such as during whiteouts.
The overdrive feature is great for faster heat generator and increasing heat output but if you left in overdrive for long, the generator would break down.
There are several upgrades you can make to the generator using cores.
- Generator Upgrade I: This upgrade allows the generator to utilize different types of fuel. For instance, it can switch from coal to oil as its primary fuel source.
- Generator Upgrade II: This upgrade introduces features like Surplus Injectors, which allow the generator to burn excess fuel from other sources.
- Generator Upgrade III: This high-tier upgrade enhances the safety and effectiveness of the generator’s overdrive function.
Best Laws for Heat and Fuel

Law | Description |
---|---|
Heat Recycling | This law helps save fuel by reducing the heat demand in Housing Districts, where a large amount of heat is required. By optimizing heat usage, citizens remain warm while resources are used more efficiently. |
Weather-Adjusted Shifts | Designed to decrease heat demand in non-Housing Districts, this law can slightly reduce disease and improve fuel efficiency. It strikes a balance between maintaining worker productivity and keeping the areas adequately heated. |
Heatpipe Watch | While this law reduces overall heat demand, it comes with the risk of raising tension among citizens. If managed well, it can help conserve fuel without major unrest, but caution is needed to maintain social stability. |
Heat bonuses in Frostpunk 2 are extra heat given to districts based on their placement to certain structures or environmental features. These bonuses can help reduce the overall heat demand of a district; thus, saving fuel.
Districts close to the generator receive a substantial heat boost and tiles located in sturdy crevasses or sheltered areas give you extra heat in Frostpunk 2.
When districts are placed next to each other, they can share heat bonuses. For instance, if a Housing District is adjacent to another district, it may receive a +20 heat bonus if positioned correctly.
Note: Laws are passed through the Council Hall. You need to build the Council Hall first.
What happens when you do and don’t have heat bonuses
Districts with heat bonuses need less fuel to maintain comfortable temperatures in Frostpunk 2. When you have heat bonuses your citizens are less likely to fall ill or due from extreme cold.
When there are fewer sick people and death toll is low, tension levels within your cities go down, boosting moral and trust.
Buildings operating at normal temperatures perform better, leading to productivity in resource generation and other activities such as gathering fuel.
But without heat bonuses, Frostpunk 2 districts will require significantly more fuel to maintain good temperatures.
For example, a Housing District that normally requires 40 heat might still need that full amount if no bonuses are applied.
Insufficient heating leads to illness and potential fatalities among citizens. When people fall ill or die which can escalate into a crisis that increases tension and reduces trust in leadership.
Not having heat bonuses also lead to higher fuel consumption which will quickly deplete your resources. So, in such a situation, you will be forced to gather fuel and generate heat rather than focusing on food production and exploration.
As citizens suffer from cold conditions, discontent may rise, leading to protests or other forms of civil unrest that can destabilize your city.
