In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you get to build a fun and lively Hideout by getting cute little pets that are available in the game. You can add puppies, foxes, and cats, and other types of animals to your hideout.
The process starts when you have been able to finish enough of the main story to get your Hideout during the “From Sparks to Flame” quest.
At this point you can start getting pets when you come across various animals in the streets, countryside, and even near sacred shrines.
In this guide, I will explain and show you how to unlock pets for your hideout in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
How to Unlock Pets for Hideout in AC Shadows
When you approach animals, whether it is a stray dog, a cat or any other friendly animals that the game allows you to pet, you will get a prompt to interact with them.
Press Y on Xbox and Triangle on PS5 to pet the animal. You can do this anywhere in the game as long as you come across an animal you can pet.
When you pat the animal, it is captured and added to your collection of pets, and you can later place it in your Hideout.
The game also has other ways of helping you expand your pet collection. For instance, some Sumi-e painting challenges may reward you with a special animal that may only be available during certain times of the year in the game world.
These artistic challenges give you exclusive pets to add to your collection.
Note: Common pets (e.g., generic cats/dogs) can be placed multiple times. Unique pets (e.g., Tsuki-maru) are restricted to one instance.
There are also many other side quests like the “Thrown to the Dogs” mission where the plot itself will lead you to get a special pet like Tsuki-maru, a loyal friend that is not similar to other ordinary animals that you will.
Some merchants and the in-game store also sell pets, but they are quite expensive and require a lot of money to buy them.
When you have got a good number of pets, it is time to put them in your Hideout. First, you need to go to your Hideout to use the Build mode.

In the Hiroma room, there is a table that activates the “Improve Hideout” menu. You need to go to the “Build” option by pressing X on Xbox on Square on PS5 and look for the pets’ tab, which is represented by an animal icon.

This interface lists all the pets you have collected and allows you to place any of them in any of the available slots within your Hideout.
Most of the animals can be put in the same spot more than once to make the place look and feel lively, but some special pets, such as those gotten from specific quests, can only be used once.
