Atlantean civilization has a lot of fun in Age of Mythology ReTold. They not only get to convert Oracles into Hero Oracles but they also get exclusive access to Promethean Units.
Their design and mechanics are closely linked to their mythological background — they are “men of clay” made by Prometheus and feature a one-of-a-kind splitting ability.
When a Promethean dies, it splits into two smaller units (Promethean Offspring), which can help to overwhelm enemy forces if utilized properly.
How To Unlock Promethean Units In Age of Mythology Retold

Note: You have to progress to the Classical Age at least to get access to Promethean Units. In Retold, unit training and upgrades (including the myth units) can be unlocked through advancing your age.
During the game setup, choose Prometheus as your Minor God. This is a requirement to gain access to Promethean units and this is only possible if you select either the Kronos or Oranos Pantheon.
After selecting Prometheus, build a Temple in your civilization. The Temple is necessary for training Promethean units. Once the Temple is constructed, you can start training Promethean units. Promethean Units can be further upgraded using resources.
Once you have chosen Prometheus, you can train additional Promethean units at your Temple. However, there are some requirements:
- You must have 75 Food and 8 Favor available as resources
- Your civilization needs to have two free population slots
Note: Promethean Units are exclusive to Atlantean civilizations.
Category | Details |
---|---|
Strengths | Good versus human troops and effective for raiding enemy economies. The split mechanic allows you to gain numerical advantage in skirmishes. |
Weaknesses | Weak to ranged units and buildings, making them less effective in direct sieges or against fortified bases. Their collective power can be also be diminished if enemy forces have a sufficiently high proportion of myth units, or if they are drawn into poor fights. |

Promethean Vs. Promethean Off Spring Unit Stats and Abilities
When a Promethean is killed in battle, it spawns two Promethean Offspring units with slightly different stats.
Hitpoints | Crush Armor | Hack Armor | Pierce Armor | Speed | Hack Damage | Crush Damage | Rate of Fire | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Promethean | 175 | 80 percent | 60 percent | 25 percent | 4.3 | 12 | 4 | 1,1 |
Promethean Offspring | 80 | 80 percent | 25 percent | 35 percent | 5.5 | 6 | 2 | 1.1 |
The offspring inherit many of the parent’s upgrades (except cost and training time modifications) and, due to their smaller size, are sometimes harder for enemies to target.
How to Upgrade Promethean Units

As mentioned earlier, having a Temple is required to train and upgrade Promethean units. You need to research Alluvial Clay technology and researching it requires 140 Food and 10 Favor.
In the Temple, locate the research menu and select the Alluvial Clay technology. Once you have the necessary resources, start the research process. It will take some time to complete.
Researching Alluvial Clay increases Promethean hitpoints by 30% (from 175 to 228 HP). It also increases Promethean Offspring hitpoints by 30% (from 80 to 104 HP).
Lastly, the upgrades lead to an additional Promethean Offspring spawn when the main Promethean dies.
How to Train Promethean Units
Once the Temple is available, you can train Prometheans. In Age of Mythology Retold, the cost is roughly 90 food and 9 favor, and each Promethean takes up 2 population slots.
Training time per unit is about 18 seconds which means you can really ramp up their training.
