For Whom the Bells Tolls is a quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 that has a very unique designed. You are tasked with brewing a fever potion to save Captain Thomas. However, unlike other fetch quests this one is a bit different.

Hans will end up at the gallows and you have only 12 bell rings to save him. If the 12 bells are rung, his head is not going to be attached to him body. Only Thomas can prove his innocence, but he is dying of a fever.

You first need to find the crafting recipe / formula for the fever potion, brew it, and then bring it back to the tower.

Most of the time in this quest is spent chasing down the formula but if you already have it, you can simply brew it and be done with it.

How to Find Captain Thomas

To get to Thomas, you will have to sneak into the inner part of the castle.

Pass through the stone arch and up the stairs to the building directly above the well.

  • Go inside and up to the right-hand staircase into the kitchen.
  • In the kitchen, go up the stairs on your left, then through the door at the top.
  • Go left, down to the back of the pantry and up the stairs there.
  • Go up again and up a pair of stairs, another. And there may be a sentry at the bottom of the second staircase — if so, throw a stone to distract him and slide by undetected.
  • Continue along the stairwells until you reach the tower where Thomas lies in the care of his sister.

When you get there, Adela will tell you that Thomas needs some special tonic from the physician.

You’ll have to go find it yourself since the physician is away with the lord at the moment.” And if you’re not especially devout, now’s a fantastic time to swipe the golden crucifix from the altar in the next room, especially with the priest out of sight.

How to Get a Lockpick

If you can’t sell ice to an Eskimo, you’ll have to pick the physician’s lock to break into his chest to gather the ingredients you need to prepare Thomas’s tonic. The video above charts that route from Thomas to the physician’s quarters — picking up a lockpick on the way — but here’s a full rundown of how to do it:

Retrace your steps. You’re going to meet the guard now, and a servant girl sweeping in the bottom of the stairs. Wait for the servant to go, then throw a rock to divert the guard and sneak past.

Access the courtyard. Before you descend back down into the kitchen, open the very last door in the pantry, then the next door inside and step into a courtyard.

Wend through a second courtyard. Keep hugging the left wall, and slip through the gate into a second courtyard, where you’ll find a blacksmith and a handful of cards.

Collect the lockpick. Follow along the left side, near the stables, to keep out of view of the guards. Far left; collect the lockpick from a small container on a shelf.

Scale the battlements. Go back through the gate and walk on the battlements. Watch out for patrolling guard as you go around the right side and into the door at the far end.

Reach the physician’s room. Go through the door at the end of the room and continue up until you reach a dead-end corridor with a door on either side. Pick the appropriate door to go into the physician’s room.

Encounter Katherine. Inside you’ll find Katherine — the mysterious woman you met in Troskowitz. She may agree to give a hand if you could convince her but if you fail to, you have to do it alone.

You can also buy lockpicks from the stablehand, but you have to steal some gross of groschen to pay for it (he doesn’t take stolen things). This method is a lot simpler, and since an average lock can be handled with a single lockpick.

Fever Tonic Location and Recipe

If Katherine refuses to help you take the physician’s journal from the wooden shelf near the door. Read the journal and then use the lockpick to open the chest that is sitting in the middle of the room.

The following is the fever tonic recipe you will find inside the chest:

  • 3x feverfew
  • 2x ginger
  • 1x elderberry leaf

With the fever potion in hand go back to Thomas and save his life.
