Grappling Hook is a really useful item that will help you greatly when climbing higher areas without having to engage in unnecessary battles. You get this item after completing Some Like it Dark main quest. In this Dying Light: The Beast guide, I will tell you how to get this item, how to use the grappling hook, and ways to upgrade it.

Getting the Grappling Hook in Dying Light: The Beast

Keep advancing your main story until you reach the “Some Like it Dark” quest. After completing this quest, you will get the Grappling Hook item. Follow my lead:

Make your way to the Vale region, which will be located northeast of Old Town. It’s suggested that you reach level 6 first before entering this area. Defeat the Baron’s soldiers surrounding a stranger in the valley. Now, Sven will ask you to save his comrades. After completing his request, the Some Like it Dark quest will end, and you will get the following rewards:

  • 10,000 XP
  • Grappling Hook
  • Survivor Spiked Glove
  • Co-op Lootbox (If played in cooperative mode)
  • 750 Old World Money

How to Use the Grappling Hook in Dying Light: The Beast

As the name suggests, you can use the Grappling Hook to swing around, and with a few manual pages, you can upgrade it to unlock some additional moves.

When you upgrade it to Rare level, you unlock the ability to pull yourself towards objects. To do that, equip it in your gadget slot and hold the gadget button (MMB/L1/LB).

Tap the button to pull yourself towards your target and hold to swing. You need just 1 manual page to upgrade to the Rare tier.

When you move to the Epic level, you get an advanced pull move that you can use to toss enemies around. It doesn’t deal any damage and doesn’t have a cooldown. A pretty fun move, but sometimes useful if you want to distance yourself from the enemy. 1 intermediate manual page is required to upgrade from Rare to Epic tier.

Each Grappling Hook use consumes some stamina, so keep an eye out for that.

To get the full potential of the grappling hook, you’ll want to upgrade it. If you don’t, its usefulness will be limited. Key points:

  • Manual Pages are required for upgrades. There are tiers: Beginner / Intermediate etc.

At first, after unlocking, you get the base version: swing + basic pull. To unlock enemy pulls / stronger retraction / better swing speed etc., you need to apply the upgrades.

Making upgrades is really important here because without them, the grappling hook is weak and only works for a short distance. I also noticed that there is a bug in the game that stops you from attaching to certain surfaces even though visually they look like they should.
