Assassin’s Creed Shadows launched on the Nintendo Switch 2 late last year and ended up being one of the best AAA ports for the platform released in 2025. In addition to Star Wars Outlaws, this Assassin’s Creed title shows the extent to which Ubisoft has optimized its games for Nintendo’s latest console.

Broadly speaking, Ubisoft developers found the Nintendo Switch 2 quite impressive and enjoyable to work with. In fact, one developer even described the whole experience as a pleasure.

On the subject of Ubisoft’s latest Nintendo Switch 2 port, Rendering Technical Architect Nicolas Lopez told Digital Foundry that he was pleasantly surprised by Nintendo’s platform.

He appreciated the upgrades made to the console compared to the original Switch, despite the team having to wrestle with memory management and limited GPU power on the hardware. As Nicolas Lopez puts it, Switch 2 ports don’t appear all that impossible once developers understand the specifics of the GPU architecture.

Nintendo really improved their SDK, tool chain, and everything versus Switch 1. It was really a pleasure to work with the hardware and the SDK. -Nicolas Lopez

In the same discussion, the developer pointed out the fact that games built with scalability in mind are relatively easier to port to the Switch 2. He also emphasized that porting the game to the platform cannot be an afterthought.

“If your engine doesn’t have a strong scalability system, that’s going to be hard on a low-spec platform.”

Of course, the full conversation with Ubisoft discussed the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in a lot more depth. The video made it clear that Ubisoft has found its footing with the console, leading to high expectations for similar releases in the future.
