What happened to “Make games great again” ?

In February 2025 Elon Musk confirmed plans for an AI driven game studio under xAI, tentatively tied to his “Make Games Great Again” vision. The goal was to disrupt the gaming industry with photorealistic graphics and AI driven game development.

However, since the original discussion in 2024 and then a confirmation of Musk’s studio in Feb 2025, updates have been spares, raising questions about the studio’s progress, especially in light of Musk’s recent political fallout with President Donald Trump and his shifting business priorities.

Elon Musk first shared his vision for the gaming studio back in November 2024 via posts on X, expressing his deep frustration with what he described as “woke politics and DEI” in the gaming industry.

The gaming venture was formally confirmed by Musk in February 2025 during a Grok 3 livestream, confirming that xAI, his research company, would develop an AI game studio.

The studio would leverage advanced AI for game design. A post from an xAI employee indicated the studio’s development team comprised of 9 members, including Musk, suggesting an early stage project with a small footprint.

The studio aimed to build cutting edge graphics and gameplay designs using xAI’s capabilities to differentiate itself in a highly competitive space. However, no game, genres, or release timelines have been disclosed, leaving the project’s scope ambiguous.

As of June 2025, there have been no major public updates on the xAI Game Studio apart from Elon expressing his interest in continuing. The lack of progress could indicate several possibilities including early development phase, deprioritization, and industry challenges.

The absence of any real updates does not confirm abandonment, but it fuels speculation that the project may be on hold or progressing slower than expected. Musk’s history of announcing ambitious ideas, some of which, like Tesla’s Full Self-Driving timelines, face delays suggests the studio could remain a long-term goal rather than an immediate focus.

But Musk’s very public, and messy feud with President Donald Trump might have had a huge impact on the studio since the studio is closely tied to the MAGA movement (Make America Great Again).

Musk’s feud with Trump escalated in June 2025 after disagreements over policy and Musk’s claims of influencing the Trump election. His deteriorating relationship with MAGA and President Trump has shifted his public and professional focus. Following his departure of DOGE, Musk has reportedly reduced his political involvement.

Musk’s energies are redirected to Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI’s core AI ventures. The shift in Musk’s focus has led to speculations that Musk’s AI game studio, tied to the “Make Games Great Again’ rhetoric (a nod to Trump’s slogan) may have been deprioritized behind the scenes in wake of their public fallout.

While there is no direct evidence linking Musk and Trump’s feud to the studio’s current status, Elon Musk’s reduced political activity and the backlash he faced during his time at DOGE, may have strained his bandwidth, sidelining less critical ventures like the AI Game Studio.

The game studio’s alignment with xAI suggests it could exist as a long term initiative but its lack of updates and a small team of only nine people makes me lean toward deprioritization but not abandonment.

Since Feb. 2025 xAI has posted no job listings for its game studio and as it stands, there is no official website that exists. Apart from a Feb. 2025 recruitment post there is limited information about the game studio’s hiring status, but the company is going for a more targeted approach by sharing informal hiring announcement on X, the last one came in May.

Trademark filings often signal a company’s intent to commercialize a project but no filings directly linked to xAI game studio and/or “Make Games Great Again’ have been filed at the USPTO as of June 2025. The lack of trademark activity reinforces that the studio is in its preliminary phase with no imminent plans for commercialization of its projects, which aligns with the small team size and lack of updates around the studio.

Musk’s AI game studio, tied to ‘Make Games Great Again” vision, remains an intriguing but underdeveloped product for now. Lack of trademarks, limited hiring, and possible deprioritization amid Musk’s focus on Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI’s core work means we may not see anything for a long time.

His fallout with Trump in likely indirectly impacted the studio’s momentum For now, the studio remains a speculative venture in Elon Musk’s massive portfolio.
