The next generation of console gaming is closing in quickly, with the PS5 and Xbox Series S|X set to turn six by the end of this year. According to recent reports and statements, Xbox is expected to kick off its next generation as early as next year.

Sony, on the other hand, does not appear as keen to leave the PS5 behind. According to a new report, the gaming giant might be considering a delay to 2029 for the PS6.

PS5 Console

As Jason Schreier reports, Sony is currently looking at plans to launch the PS6 after 2027. The popular insider says that the company is considering a delay to 2028 or even 2029, as it attempts to work toward maintaining current levels of engagement for the console business.

As the leaker puts it, this shift would be a major change to a strategy Sony likely came up with a while back. Also, if recent reports are to be believed, much of the PS6’s hardware has already been finalized and is unlikely to change, even with a potential delay in place.

Sony’s concerns aside, the fans might not necessarily mind the delay. Many have already discussed how the PS6 should arrive later rather than sooner, claiming that the PS5 already has more than enough in terms of hardware specifications for the fans.

Elsewhere, Jason Schreier also mentioned a potential price hike coming up for the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. All of this, of course, has everything to do with the ongoing memory shortages, something Nintendo, Sony, and every other consumer tech products company in the world is currently fighting an uphill battle against.
