Sony has patented a new type of tech that let’s players create in-game customization items using text commands. Filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment in the US, the tech has the capability to completely change the way we deal with in-game customization items such as armor, helmets, gear, and skins.

Imagine playing a video game where you can craft a character or item not by the usual method of selecting options from menus, but by simply describing what you envision. For instance, you might say, “I want a gleaming, azure armor that radiates light in darkness, adorned with dragon scales,” and the game would interpret your words to create it.

The game uses advanced tech to translate your textual description into a tangible 3D model. It’s akin to narrating a tale to the game, which then manifests your narrative into the game’s reality.

Sony’s customization patent also describes an “Accuracy Model,” suggesting that if you’re dissatisfied with any aspect of your creation, you can refine it by altering your description. The game dynamically adjusts your item or character accordingly.

The patent indicates the use of generative AI, which is currently a hot topic in technology, especially in game development.

Also, this is not the first patent Sony has filed. A similar tech was patented back in 2022 that revealed Sony’s plans to use voice to create in-game items.

There’s also a social element; you can share your unique creations with other players in a multiplayer setting.

However, the patent hints at a monetization model where you might need to use in-game currency—or possibly real money—to acquire these items. This aspect could be controversial, as gamers often push back against such features.

DisclaimerPatents are filed on all the time but that doesn’t mean their particular tech will ever be used in the field. Now, seeing this patent and how AI is quickly taking over many industries, I see some form of application of this tech in future Sony games. Whether that’ll be on PS5 or PS6 remains to be seen.
