DeNA, the developer behind Pokémon TCG Pocket, has confirmed plans for a significant update for later this year. The major update will make big changes and improvements to the game in hopes of addressing the lack of player retention.

DeNA, the developer behind Pokémon TCG Pocket, has confirmed plans for a significant update. As a result, developers are now preparing a “major update” to the collection experience.

While exact details are being kept under wraps, DeNA says the focus will be on improving the enjoyment of collecting cards, one of the game’s core features.

The announcement follows the recent gameplay changes made to the game on July 31, when The Pokemon Company revamped the trading system. The trade system overhaul introduced a new “Want” feature to make finding desired cards easier for the players.

The new system replaced the divisive Trade Medals with a fresh currency called Hikari no Suna, and added new ways to earn in through extra cards, missions, and events in Pokemon TCG Pocket.

Despite crossing an impressive 100 million downloads worldwide by February 2025 and enjoying unusually high early retention compared to other DeNA titles, Pokémon TCG Pocket has struggled to maintain long-term engagement.

Can a major update improve things? Only time will tell but I’m sure the recent artwork plagiarism scandal isn’t helping the game’s reputation.

DeNA is planning to share more details with users in the coming weeks and months.
