DX12 or Vulkan is an age of discussion at this point and the answer is different every time a new game comes out. Now that Civilization 7 is released, we are again here to talk about which is better, DX12 or Vulkan?

The simple answer is Vulkan but depending on how it performs on your specific hardware, switch to DX12 if needed.

Your first choice should be Vulkan.

Vulkan performs better on most hardware configurations and graphics settings compared to DX12. The only problem with Vulkan so far is that it might make texts look blurry on your PC if you have upscaling turned on.

But other than that, visually and performance wise, Vulkan runs better.

But again, this is going to depend on your hardware and driver versions. Make sure to install the latest drivers on your GPUs as it makes a difference.

It is also worth noting that in some cases DX12 might perform better on Windows and Vulkan might do better on Linux.

Secondly, if you see performance issues or want to compare how DX12 and Vulkan perform on your specific hardware set up then you can switch between the two.

But in any case, I recommend going with Vulkan as your first choice and then compare the performance with DX12 so see how both perform on your PC.

When first boot up the game it will ask you to select DX12 or Vulkan. Once an option is locked in you won’t get this pop-up again.
