AI adoption in the games industry is at its earliest stage, but many are already hopeful about the future of the technology. Moving forward, the likes of EA, Take-Two, and Microsoft plan to use AI as much as possible, and a recent statement from Sony confirms it will follow suit.
During a recent investor meeting, CFO Lin Tao discussed the company’s stance on artificial intelligence and plans for the future. According to the CFO, Sony even has plans to help commercialize AI, believing it will benefit the wider industry.
She believes AI is just like any other tool assisting developers in the process of game creation. This is why Sony has made it a mission to effectively “master the tool.“

CFO Lin Tao also addressed the concerns regarding AI’s lack of artistry. The executive admitted that AI would shine the brightest when combined with an artist’s talents. As such, it seems Sony does not see artificial intelligence as a replacement for human talent as much as it considers AI an extension of it.
“We see it as another powerful tool. Sony’s mission is to master the tool and assist in its commercialization.” -Lin Tao
Going by these statements, PlayStation’s internal teams are likely experimenting with AI at this very moment. Perhaps first-party games released for the PS5 in the final parts of its lifespan will show glimpses of how Sony intends to use artificial intelligence during game development.
As further proof of the company’s dedication to artificial intelligence, Sony has also filed various AI-related patents, hinting that it plans to make use of the technology beyond game development. With the PS6 expected to arrive in 2028, perhaps the console will ship with certain AI-related features, like a potential assistant, to improve the end-user experience.
