Sony announced its official God of War adaptation in partnership with Prime Video a while back. As production of the show moves forward, the company has come forward with a first look for the fans today.
The image shows off Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus in what appears to be a very early shot of the series. However, initial reactions to this reveal have been anything but positive, and many are now criticizing this new rendition of God of War.

Over on Twitter, many have come forward to say that the image looks more like a cosplay than a professional TV series production.
In particular, fans are not too happy with Ryan Hurst’s look as Kratos, with many calling him too small for the character. Many have even called the image ‘AI-generated’ due to discrepancies between the source material and TV series adaptation.
While most of the critiques appear to revolve around Kratos for now, some have also pointed to Atreus looking very different from his game counterpart. However, as HBO Max’s The Last of Us showed, audiences are willing to look past these differences when the actors deliver convincing performances on screen.
All in all, it seems most people are not too hopeful about God of War’s transition to live-action. Even the more enthusiastic fans admit that this first image looks rough, but they believe the final version is likely to show major improvements.

Following PlayStation’s success with The Last of Us adaptation, many had high expectations for God of War. Because of the series’ recent focus on its characters and storytelling, Sony likely believed it would be a natural fit for television and the episodic series format.
While the first preview does undoubtedly look rough, it remains to be seen how Prime Video’s God of War will eventually turn out. At the time of writing, excitement regarding the series is at an all-time high following the announcement of new remakes, so audiences are likely to show up for the live-action adaptation if Sony can address initial criticisms.
