I was really excited for FF7 Rebirth ever since they announced a Verified badge for it. However, I have to say things are a little rough for sure. The game runs well, but some issues kind of kill the vibe.
First off, this game forces HDR like your aunt forces pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. The problem with that is Steam Deck screens hate HDR. So, every time you launch into the game you have to turn it off.
To avoid doing it every time, here is a fix:
- Open the game’s Steam settings.
- Under “Launch Options” in General Tab type:
DXVK_HDR=0 %command%
I have a complete guide to the HDR issue if you want more clarity on how to fix it.
The game offers 30/60/90/120 FPS caps, but real-world performance varies widely. Expect 20–40 FPS depending on the area you are in.
Setting | Recommendation | Notes |
---|---|---|
Dynamic Resolution | 50%–66% scaling | 66% retains clarity but costs ~3 FPS vs. 50%. |
Texture Resolution | Medium (with caution) | Uses more RAM; may cause stutters in later game areas. Stick to Low for stability. |
Preset | Low | Mandatory for playable performance. |
Anti-Aliasing | TAA | Minimal performance hit (~2 FPS) and improves clarity over TAA+. |
In open world areas you can hit 35-40 FPS while wandering around the grasslands. Crowded towns become a problem though, where you can sometimes see drops into the 20s and stutters.
However, combat encounters are surprisingly stable. Steam Deck can output 25-30 fps in FF7 Rebirth.
Some may want to cap the frame rate at 30 but in my experience, the frame rates dropped into the 20s even with 30 fps cap when I entered towns.
