If you’re looking for planetary samples then you need to find Interal Trails. Planetary Samples are needed to make important upgrades in The Alters, but there are only a few you can find in each chapter of the game. Tracking them down requires the Luminator and searching every nook and cranny.
The First Interal Trail is found in Act 1 and more are available in Act 3. In the first chapter there were only two and the story is the same, you can find 2 more Interal Trail locations.
Know that we can’t start looking for Interal Trails in Act 3 until the first Magnet Storm. Your focus during this time should be supplying resources to the rebels because otherwise they will die.
Interal Location South
After the first Magnet Storm, head southwest from your base. Climb up down a ledge and keep heading south into a darkened valley. The Planetary Sample is just inside the entrance of the valley.
Interal Location North
Act 3 and the game’s final Planetary Sample becomes available when the Sunrise is coming up. Head west from the Enriched Metals deposits in the North of your base. From there we need to backtrack to the southern section of the deposit’s radiation field.
