Keep progressing through The Outer Worlds 2 and you will eventually reach the Discrete Mathematics quest, where you will be met with two options.
You can either kill Victor or spare him. Both options play a crucial role in how your game continues, so it’s important to understand their outcomes first.
You’ll receive the Discrete Mathematics side quest after investigating a missing batch of N-Ray cells in Euphoria Coast. Following the quest markers eventually leads you to the N-Ray Range Facility on Paradise Island.
Inside, you’ll find logs hinting that a man named Victor Clemens has been rerouting energy supplies and covering his tracks. Reading these logs before confronting him unlocks extra dialogue options later.
| Outcome | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Spare Victor | Learn more about Augustine de Vries; unlock ending cameo; gain N-Ray Capacitor; slight reputation boost | Miss out on Victor’s blaster; requires Speech 5 or reading logs |
| Kill Victor | Get Victor’s unique weapon; simpler path (no skill checks) | Lose story information; Victor removed from ending; minor reputation loss |
Should I Kill or Spare Victor in Outer Worlds 2
Let’s not rush the decision and understand what both options do:
If you let Victor live:
Victor is located in the control room of the N-Ray Range facility.
If you choose to spare Victor, he will agree to leave De Vries’ and reveal her plans. This makes sparing Victor the best choice. Later on, you will see him working as a janitor. But getting this option requires Speech 5. What if you don’t have that?
Follow my lead:
- Invite Marisol to your party before talking to Victor.
- Gain his Terminal’s access during the quest.
- Saved Exemplar Foxworth, which is possible if you are at level 5 Medical or have the Trauma Kit.
- Rescue Novice Archivist Trammell and keep him alive.
Choose the dialogue choices below to get the option for sparing him:
- There’s always a choice… to get hurt.
- I thought you were a scientist… remembered?
- Wait a minute… de Vries put you up to this.
- Would pure scientific… That was me.
- I think I finally understand you… been doing here.
- Someone is afraid of living to see the consequences of his actions.
For sparing Victor you will get the following rewards:
- XP: 3,200
- Item: N-Ray Capacitor (used in later side quests)
- Intel: Extra information about de Vries’ experiments
- Ending Change: Victor appears as a janitor in the Incognito epilogue montage, hinting at partial redemption.
- Slight reputation boost with the Eden Authority faction.
Note: Choosing to spare Victor is the best option. Victor will disclose de Vries’ plans on his own and also cut ties with her at the end of the game.

If you kill Victor:
Choose all the hostile dialogue options, and you will eventually get into a fight with Victor. Winning this game will not be a challenge for you, and Victor will go down pretty quickly. After that, you can loot the Maintenance Hatch Key from his corpse.

However, things can take a brutal turn if you have Aza in your team, as then Victor won’t have an easy death. She will torture Victor to get some information out of him, which she does, just a little bit. After that, he will die, which is the same as the killing option. Victor will only survive if you pick the first option, which is to spare him.

Long story short, letting Victor live is easily the best option, which will provide you with a significant benefit. If you are having trouble with whom to give the Pupa to during the “Pinching the Pupa” side quest, then feel free to check our guide on that as well.
