When you reach a main mission called “A Cause Worth Killing For” in The Outer Worlds 2, you will have to make a choice; use the intercom or attack the automechs. This is a key decision that will define how the rest of the mission and part of the story goes.

Both options lead to the same story outcome but how you handle this situation depends entirely on your build, skills, and play style.

Your objective is to access the facility’s control room, but the entrance is heavily guarded. Near the door, you’ll find an intercom terminal giving you two distinct paths forward:

  1. Use the Intercom to talk your way through the situation.
  2. Attack the Automechs and clear the area by force.

Best The Outer Worlds 2 Intercom Choice

The best choice here is to use the Intercom if your Speech or Persuade skill is decent and you have the Mechanist Badge. This option is quicker, safer.

PlaystyleRecommended OptionReason
Speech / Stealth buildUse IntercomAvoids combat and fits your skill path
Combat / Heavy Weapons buildAttack the AutomechsMore loot, XP, and challenge
Hybrid build (balanced skills)Use Intercom first — attack if you failLets you attempt diplomacy first
Low resources / low ammoUse IntercomSaves consumables and repair costs
Completionist playersAttack the AutomechsFor full XP and loot rewards

Using the Intercom means you won’t have to go into the combat situation which is best for stealth or speech focused builds in The Outer Worlds. Even if you have a combat heavy build, going with the Intercom saves ammo and healing items because the battle ahead isn’t easy.

Lastly, you avoid needless destruction that could affect faction perception later.

At the intercom select the option to disable automech defenses. Choose the “This is Cadet Robin Mowry…” option using the badge and then keep going with the conversation until you can select “Then can you help me out?” Speech 1 response to finally bring down the Automech defenses in The Outer Worlds 2.
