Starfield has been officially announced for the PS5, and it heads to the platform on April 7. This version of the game is priced at just $50 and offers numerous upgrades over the Xbox Series S|X version that launched over two years ago in 2023.

Bethesda is clearly quite excited about Starfield, especially since the platform already has an existing fanbase that has enjoyed the studio’s output for multiple years. In a recent interview, Todd Howard also stated that he always wanted this port to happen.

In an interview with IGN, Todd Howard was asked to discuss and clarify his stance on Starfield’s PS5 port. The developer admitted that Starfield’s PS5 release was always a question from the beginning, and both the audiences and developers were curious whether it would eventually happen.

According to the Bethesda director, the team never moved away from PlayStation entirely. Todd Howard pointed to the fact that the studio was working on Fallout 76 and updates for games like Fallout 4 for PS5, even when Starfield launched as an exclusive to Xbox Series S|X and PC.

As he puts it, the studio still had a close relationship with PlayStation and its audience. This is why the PlayStation port was mostly a matter of when, not if. Todd Howard even went as far as to say that this was something the team wanted to do from the beginning.

“It was a question in the audience. It was a question for us. We’ve always wanted to do it.” -Todd Howard

Interestingly, this is not the first time an Xbox-based team has shown excitement on the subject of a PlayStation port. In the past, developers like Rare showed enthusiasm when Sea of Thieves was announced for the PS5. Bethesda is now similarly excited, likely due to the prospect of bringing Starfield to millions of new gamers.
