The Assassin’s Creed franchise has yet to revisit multiplayer gameplay after the debacle that was Assassin’s Creed Unity’s launch, but Ubisoft is currently exploring the possibility of reintroducing these elements to the franchise.
In addition to ongoing work on the multiplayer project Assassin’s Creed Invictus, new reports shed light on another internal project from the studio that aimed to reintroduce multiplayer elements to the series. Codenamed Assassin’s Creed League, this project started out as potential DLC for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
The goal for Ubisoft was to lay the groundwork for cooperative multiplayer that could then be translated to future games. However, a new report states that this game has now been scrapped.

Origami’s report on Assassin’s Creed league states that Assassin’s Creed League was in the works at Ubisoft Annecy.
As per the report, Ubisoft Annecy experimented with the idea of making a standalone cooperative multiplayer experience with elements of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The team also considered positioning Assassin’s Creed League as an add-on to an existing title before eventually settling on the former option.
The team was hoping to launch a closed playtest for the title in May 2026, but these plans came to an abrupt halt recently. It is said that the formation of the Tencent-led Vantage Studios, followed by the company’s strict restructuring and reorganization plans, is to blame for this cancellation.
The report states that the Ubisoft Annecy team was notified of this cancellation last week, but the saving grace, if there is any in this situation, is that the team intends to preserve certain technical elements of this project for future pitches of co-op multiplayer in Assassin’s Creed.
Of course, this is just one of the many cancelled projects from Ubisoft recently. In addition to Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake, the team has scrapped various other games as it continues to restructure a major chunk of its team.
