Fix #3 – Update BIOS For Your Intel 13th or 14th Gen CPU or Underclock It

If WUCHANG Fallen Feathers keeps crashing during shader compilation on your PC and you are using an Intel 13th or 14th Generation CPU, then the CPU is the reason for these crashes.

These Raptor Lake CPUs are well-known for their technical issue, i.e, motherboards with old BIOS delivering uneven voltage, which can fry the CPU. This is the reason Wuchang Fallen Feathers and other Unreal Engine 5 games crash with the Out of Video Memory error while compiling shaders. You can fix these Out of Video Memory crashes by updating the BIOS.

How to fix the WUCHANG Fallen Feathers Out of Video Memory crash on PC?

If the BIOS update didn’t fix the issue, your CPU has likely been damaged by the uneven voltage. In that case, to fix the Wuchang Fallen Feathers Out of Video Memory error, underclock the Performance Core Ratio on your Raptor Lake CPU. After underclocking it, launch Wuchang and let the shaders compile. Once the shader compilation is done, revert the CPU to its default Performance Core Ratio.

Here is how you can reduce the Performance Core Ratio of your CPU:

  • Download and install Intel Extreme Tuning Utility.
  • Open the application and set the Performance Core ratio to 50x.
  • Launch WUCHANG Fallen Feathers, and the shaders will compile without crashing the game.
  • Once the compilation is done, close the game, and revert the Performance Core Ratio its its default value.
  • Play Wuchang Fallen Feathers, and the Out of Video Memory error is now fixed.

If WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers is still crashing with the Out of Video Memory error after compiling shaders, then keep the Peformance Core Ratio underclocked to fix it.

Fix #4 – Turn on Sysmem Fallback Policy for Wuchang Fallen Feathers

CUDA – Sysmem Fallback Policy is a setting in the NVIDIA Control Panel that NVIDIA added to specifically fix the Out of Video Memory crashes in PC games.

In our testing, enabling this setting fixed the Out of Video Memory error in a lot of UE5 games, including Black Myth Wukong. Enable Sysmem Fallback Policy to fix the Out of Video Memory crash in Wuchang Fallen Feathers. Here is how you can use the Sysmem Fallback Policy:

  • Open the Nvidia Control Panel.
  • Click 3D Settings and go to Manage 3D Settings.
  • Go to the “Program settings” tab and select WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers from the dropdown menu.
  • Look for the “CUDA – Sysmem Fallback Policy” setting in the options and click the dropdown arrow next to it.
  • Select the “Prefer Sysmem Fallback”, and apply the changes.
  • Launch WUCHANG Fallen Features, and the out of video memory error is fixed.

Fix #5 – Clear NVIDIA Shader Cache and Increase Its Size

As mentioned, WUCHANG Fallen Feathers keeps crashing during the shader compilation step for a lot of PC users. This is because the default shader cache size set by the GPU driver is small for the game. You can fix the WUCHANG Fallen Feathers Out of Video Memory crash by clearing the NVIDIA Shader cache and increasing its size. Here is how you can apply the fix:

  • Open the Nvidia Control Panel.
  • Go to the “Manage 3D Settings” tab.
  • Click on the “Global settings” tab.
  • Select the “Shader cache size” option and select the “Disabled” option.
  • Apply the changes and restart your PC.
  • Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, go to the “Shader cache size” option, and select “10 GB” or a higher value.
  • Play WuCHANG Fallen Feathers, shaders will be compiled, and the Out of Video Memory error will be fixed.

Fix #6 – Ensure Your Graphics Card Isn’t Using Higher GPU and Memory Clocks

Some game engines are sensitive to GPU clocks, and Unreal Engine 5 is one of them. Since the WUCHANG Fallen Feathers runs on UE5, if you have overclocked your graphics card, it is crashing the game with the Out of Video Memory error. You can fix the error by reverting your graphics card to its default GPU and Memory clocks.

Even if you haven’t overclocked your graphics card, it is still using higher GPU and Memory clocks. Most graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD AIB partners have higher GPU and Memory clocks than their respective reference models.

These higher clocks are crashing WUCHANG Fallen Feathers with the Out of Video Memory error. You can fix this issue by forcing your graphics card to use its reference clocks. You can do it by enabling the Debug Mode from your NVIDIA graphics card or by underclocking your AMD hardware.

Enable the Debug Mode (NVIDIA)

Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, click the “Help” button from the top menu, and select the “Debug Mode” option. This will force your NVIDIA graphics card to use the reference clocks for the particular model, and the Out of Vide Memory crash will be fixed.

How to enable NVidia debug mode on Windows.
Open the Nvidia Control Panel and click on “Help”. Select Debug Mode.

Underclock your AMD Graphics Card

If you have an AMD graphics card, you’ll have to manually underclock the GPU clock. This is because AMD Adrenalin Software does not offer a similar solution to the Debug Mode in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Here is how you can do it:

The difference in clock speeds between the reference model and the third-party AIB model is small, somewhere between 50 – 100 MHz. The performance loss should be negligible, and your gaming session won’t be interrupted due to random crashes.

  • First, look up the recommended GPU and Memory clocks for your graphics card.
  • Open AMD Adrenalin Software.
  • Go to the “Performance” tab.
  • Click the “Tuning” tab.
  • Click on “Custom” under “Manual Tuning”.
  • Enable “GPU Tuning” and also enable “Advanced control”.
  • Three sliders will appear: Minimum Frequency, Maximum Frequency, and Voltage.
  • You only need to adjust the “Maximum Frequency” slider.
  • Slide it a little bit to the left to lower it, and click the “Apply Changes” button at the top right. (Use the value that you find online.)
  • Play WUCHANG Fallen Feathers, and the Out of Video Memory crash is fixed.
