Take Two Interactive’s latest earning report revealed that the Grand Theft Auto series has sold nearly 455M Copies worldwide as of June 2025.
The number is up five million from the previous quarter. That means the franchise has reached more than 5.6% of the planet’s population, an unprecedented level of cultural saturation for a video game series.
Out of the total number, the latest in the series, Grand Theft Auto 5 sold 215 million units, which means 1 in 38 people on Earth own a copy of GTA 5. The publisher’s financial update also spotlights other blockbuster franchises:
- Sid Meier’s Civilization – Nearly 77 million units sold.
- Red Dead Redemption – Over 104 million units sold, with Red Dead Redemption 2 alone surpassing 77 million.
- NBA 2K – Over 162 million units sold worldwide.
- Borderlands – Over 94 million units sold, with Borderlands 3 climbing past 23 million.
In total, 13 of Take Two’s franchise have sold 5M copies each. The company also confirmed that 15 of the top 200 highest crossing games of all time belong to Take Two Interactive’s catalog.
The math behind GTA’s dominance is striking: with an estimated global population of 8.1 billion in 2025, 455 million sales equates to one copy for every 18 people on Earth.
And since many players own multiple versions across console generations — from the PS3 and Xbox 360 era to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — the actual reach is even greater when factoring in shared copies, second-hand sales, and players who’ve accessed the game via subscription services like Game Pass or PlayStation Plus.
One can only imagine what GTA 6 can do. According to one estimate, GTA 6 is projected to be a massive commercial success, with analysts predicting record-breaking sales and revenue figures of $3.2 billion in revenue in the first year, with over $1 billion in pre-orders alone.
