11 Bit Studios is back with another gem, The Alters, where the player can create their own Alters. From there we make different choices, create our path, and try to survive the fleeting day.
Every choice impacts your character, but there is no way around it. It is a game like this you need to save your progress in case you need to backtrack. However, the saving system in The Alters locks you in a box. It is very limited, but you can still do some things to fix major mistakes, if you made any.
How Save System Works in The Alters
In The Alters you can only save the game when you go to bed, but that also ends the day. When your character wakes up the game is saved and it is the next day.
There are ways to prolong the day to get more out of but when you go to bed, it is over.
You can’s manually save the game in The Alters so if you quit the game before sleeping, you will lose all your progress. So the game is actually forcing you to go to bed before quitting.
The game has a limited number of save files that it cycles through, overwriting older saves. You can mark certain save files as “secure saves” to prevent them from being overwritten, which is useful for preserving progress before major decisions or for multiple playthroughs.
You can load previous days from the main menu or pause menu. The load screen shows detailed information about each save, including resources and alter states, which helps in deciding which day to resume.
How to Manually Save the Game (Workaround)
If you want to manually save a particular day, mark it has “secure save” and it won’t get overwritten. This is your manual save, this is how you can manually save in The Alters. The problem is that you are limited to the available list of saves.
You can “secure save” multiple slots which is the best way to “manually” save your game at different points in The Alters.
Can You Go Back to a Previous Day in the Alters?
You can load back into a previous day from the game’s main menu. Quit your current game session and head back to the main menu. Loading the previous day from the within an active session is limited to your current story session. The main menu will give you a full list of available saves.
It will also show your resources in those saves so you have that information before picking a save. Choose the Load Game option and select the desired save file to boot it up.
